What is the difference between these two official PS3 headsets?

Question

Is one newer? Are they both official and are there any other official headset solutions?

Is it pointless to pay more for official headsets?

Answer

They are both official headsets, the top one came out on October 2008 and the bottom one was announced November 2010 and replaced it. They have identical features and use, with the latter model having better audio cancelation technology.

There's another official PS3 headset, the Official Stereo Headset, which is used for the game's audio as well as voice chat. It connects to the console by USB (not BlueTooth as the other headsets) offers virtual surround set as well and is more expensive than the voice chat headsets.

You can read about both on this WikiPedia page.

As for paying more for the official headsets - it's all up to you. The Sony BlueTooth headsets cost more than other brands but in my opinion offer better quality. Sony's official headsets have the advantage of offering other features on the console that other headsets don't support, like on-screen status indicator and "HQ Mode" which Sony claims offers better sound quality. In my experience playing online, you can tell which users use the official headset and which don't by their voice clarity.

Can I use the Xbox 360 Headset for game sounds instead of voice chat?

Question

I recently picked up a cheap-o Xbox 360 wired headset (one that plugs into the wireless XBox 360 controller I use). I'm not an Xbox Live Gold member, and so I don't need chat features or anything - mostly what I'm looking for is to be able to hear the game's audio with the volume on my TV turned down. However, the headset doesn't seem to emit any of the game sounds. So far I've only tried it with Fable II.

Is this a result of my stinginess? If I pick up a better headset will I be able to use it to listen to the game sounds? Or is this somehow related to the game - do only some games send game audio to the controller? Or am I crazy to think that I'll be able to hear game audio through a headset connected to my XBox 360 wireless controller?

Any help or advice appreciated!

Answer

Sorry to disappoint, but the headphone jack on the controller is for voice communications only. Game sounds, music, etc. are all played through the display device (tv/monitor).

To get the audio from the Xbox to your headset you'll need some sort of converter cable/connector that turns the red/white connector that goes to your tv to the jack that you have on your headset.

Wireless Headset with Wired Controller?

Question

I today purchased two Xbox 360 Wireless Headsets (black, if you must know) for each controller that I have: one is Wired, the other is Wireless.

I went to go sync them with my Xbox and the first one went great. I was able to select the Ring of Light my Wireless controller was on and I could speak and hear normally.

The wired controller, however, was different. Completely following the instructions word-for-word, I signed in and everything. I turned on the Wireless Headset and tried to select Quadrant 2, however the headset would skip over that quadrant as if the wired controller already had a headset connected to it.

Has anyone else had this problem mixing and matching a wired controller with a wireless headset? According to many message boards I've read on this topic, this should be possible.

EDIT I've tried all the suggested troubleshooting steps and still nothing.

EDIT2 I've tried to connect the headset first, but once I try to connect the Wired controller, it knocks the headset off that Ring of Light until you hit the Connect button on the headset again, whereby it'll just default to 3rd and 4th quadrants (skipping over 1st and 2nd).

EDIT3 Any other suggestions out there?

Answer

Have you tried connecting the wireless headset to the second controller port first, then plugging in the wired controller, much in the fashion that you first connect the headset to the wireless port then connect the wireless controllers?
