Is there a tool that checks for cheats and hacks in a given replay?

Question

Starcraft and Warcraft 3 had both sophisticated tools to check if someone cheated during a game (BWChart and W3Chart). They checked for strange behavior and impossible clicks, like selecting opponents units which are disguised by fog of war.

Does such a tool exist for Starcraft 2?

Asked by ayckoster

Answer

SC2Gears is your best bet. I don't know if it's capable of checking for out-of-vision selections at this time, but if not you can suggest it to the creator who's pretty active in updating it.

What is Modio and should I be worried?

Question

I'm playing Minecraft over Hamachi with some friends. One of them said he could make himself op on MY server with a program called Modio. What is this, should I be worried, and what can I do against it?

Answer

I'm not entirely sure what Modio has to do with Minecraft. It seems to be a utility that can transfer game saves between a PC and an Xbox 360.

If you are indeed running a server without name verification, you should worry anyway, if anyone on your server is an operator. Setting online-mode to false causes the server not to verify usernames with minecraft.net, which allows anyone to log in with any handle they wish. If you have given someone else or yourself operator privileges, this person could hijack the nickname of an op and thus gain their status.

If you want to defend yourself against this, your options are:

  1. Enable online-mode. Of course, this will effectively ban anyone with a… less privileged account.
  2. Don't give anyone operator status. Moderate the server directly via the server console.
  3. Switch to Bukkit and set up local user accounts with a plug-in such as AuthMe.

What do the +X numbers at the end of trainer names mean?

Question

For the context of this question, a "trainer" is a program that modifies the memory state of a game that is currently running.

From what I have noticed, trainers usually have a number like +3 or +4 or +10, etc., at the end of their name. What do those numbers stand for?

For example, this trainer is called Batman: Arkham City v1.02 +1.

Asked by Ashu

Answer

The amount of features the trainer has. A +2 trainer might have infinite health and infinite ammo While a +3 might also come with a infinite skill points option.

Modern Warfare 2 Hacked servers - is it a security risk?

Question

I noticed that after playing on a hacked server in MW2, I had a ping counter for the rest of my session. This made me a little curious about how the hacks worked, since it would seem that the hacked server in fact injected some code into my game. If that's true, then I am wondering if the hacked servers could in fact exploit the game code to run attacks on my machine. Finally, if that were the case, I would be extremely curious as to what security measures I could take to prevent maliciousness against me. Finally, are the hacks executed on the network level or the software level or both?

Precis:

  1. Do the hacks inject code or otherwise insert compromise into my game?
  2. if so, is that compromise in any way dangerous?
  3. if so, is there anything that I can do about it?

    • and how do they work? (vaguely, out of curiosity)

EDIT: I want to be clear: I'm not asking about security risks if I install the hack. I'm asking about the security risk if I join a game and the server is hacked.

Asked by Mechko

Answer

Modern Warfare 2 (in fact all the Infinity Ward / Treyarch COD games) are based on a heavily modernised variant of the Quake 3 engine.

This means that the server (and other clients connected to it) can send config data files to your machine and pass on weird settings.

There was an exploit some dude did on a hacked X360 version of the 1st Modern Warfare whereby he created a a "viral" config that had low gravity, extra weapon damage for certain weapons etc. that would pass from console to console.

AFAIK these transferred config settings are transient and will go when you close the game, but it is entirely possible that they could persist on the PC version.

Also, since this is all accomplisghed just by sending data about it's pretty unlikely (but not impossible) that a hacked server would use this to inject executable code into your PC.

What is the shop glitch in Fallout 3 / New Vegas?

Question

Mentioned in this question: what-are-ammo-boxes-for

I honestly have never heard of this glitch...though I didn't spend much time going through FAQs or anything while I played through Fallout 3.

I debate trying it out when I pickup New Vegas...and am curious as to how one would do it.

Asked by espais

Answer

It's a glitch which allows you to -- under certain circumstances -- purchase weapons or armor from a shopkeeper, then sell them back for more than you paid for them, and to continuously loop that process, thereby giving you anything you want from the shop, as well as all the shopkeeper's caps, essentially for free.

This YouTube video demonstrates it on PC, and I've used it successfully in both Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas (already!). By the end of my last Fallout 3 run, I had over six figures in caps. Also, for a guy with less than an hour into New Vegas, I think I'm doing OK financially -- almost 800 caps.

The trick to it is having in your inventory a weapon or piece of clothing/armor which the shopkeeper sells, preferably at a lower repair value. Sell it to him, and commit the transaction. Buy it back and commit. Lather, rinse, repeat. It may take two or three repeats before you start buying it at its original value but selling it as 100% repaired.

Are there cheat codes for Mass Effect 3 on the Xbox 360?

Question

I want to know if there are any cheat codes for the Xbox 360 version of Mass Effect 3 and, if so, how to enter them and what they are.

Possible codes:

  • God mode
  • Unlock all weapons
  • Invisibility
  • Noclip mode
  • Level unlocking
  • Infinite money/resources

Thanks.

Asked by johnjon

Answer

No, there aren't any cheat codes in the Xbox 360 version of Mass Effect 3.

If you're having trouble with money or combat, you've got several options. At any point you can turn the difficulty down in the options menu if you think the combat is a bit too challenging. Further, the more you explore the galaxy, probe planets and scan systems, the more credits and other items you'll acquire.

If you do this early on in the campaign, you should have plenty of resources and find yourself having an easy time as you continue.

Further, if you download and install the free Kingdoms of Amalur demo, you can unlock a couple of bonuses in Mass Effect 3 - one is the Chakram Launcher, which is kind of a super-powered charge attack assault rifle, and the other is a unique armor set you get from the beginning of the game. Both of these could be considered somewhat of a cheat. :)

Where to post game cheats?

Question

My ten year old son spent several hours mapping out the Power Up Panels in New Super Mario Bro's Wii, and now he'd like to share his findings with the internet masses. The trouble is, I don't know much about where to share the fruits of his labor. I created a web page to host his maps:

http://JumpingFishes.com/PowerUpPanels .

Can you recommend a forum or other venue that would appreciate all of my son's hard work?

Asked by gilly3

Answer

I usually look to gamefaqs.com. Though they are primarily limited to text-based data they do have a form to submit maps and images (and I think this qualifies).

Looking at the New Super Mario Bros. Wii section, I notice that there are already several FAQs that feature the same data collected by your son (though his versions are nicer looking). I would look into uploading it there anyway if he is so obliged, as GameFAQs is no stranger to redundancy.

Players outside of playable map in Rush game mode - exploit or legit?

Question

I was playing Rush on Operation Firestorm as the defending team (Russians) and the opposing team was able to sit in the hills to the right of their spawn point and snipe. When I tried to rush that section of the map I was getting the warning message that I need to return to the map.

Update Another tactic I see players using is to camp within this dedicated zone and spam mortars.

Is this legitimate or is this an exploit? It was quite annoying and gives the opposite team an unfair advantage.

I was playing on the Xbox 360.

Asked by DarkShiva

Answer

It's actually like that so that the defending team doesn't spawn kill the attacking team. All maps have zones where one team can't enter, those zones are defined with grey stripes in the minimap

What cheat codes are there for Resident Evil 3: Nemesis?

Question

What are the cheat codes for Resident Evil 3: Nemesis? I googled first but all I get are hints e.g., how to beat Nemesis, how to solve certain puzzles etc. Is there any cheat codes which will allow me to get powerful weapons or infinite ammo?

I've found this link which specifies some sort of codes to be applied to a save game file, but I don't have any clue how to do it......

Answer

There doesn't appear to be any cheat codes for the game that I can find. However, if you defeat Nemesis on Hard Mode he will drop something that gives you benefit.

  • First Kill - Eagle Parts A
  • Second Kill - Eagle Parts B
  • Third Kill - First Aid Spray Box
  • Forth Kill - M37 Parts A
  • Fifth Kill - M37 Parts B
  • Sixth Kill - First Aid Spray Box
  • Seventh Kill - Infinite Ammo for One Weapon

It appears as though you must beat the game several times, and on different difficulties, to unlock everything.

Source

In reference to the link that you have added: What you are seeing on that website would be Hex Editing saved game files to give you items or change things around. It is much easier to hex edit saved game files with the PC version of the game than the PS version. The two versions share the same gamesave file format, but it would require much more effort to move a game save between your Playstation and a PC.

If you are playing on a PC here is a link that you might find helpful: RE3 Hex Editing - GameFaqs Guide

If you are playing on a PSX, PS2, or PS3 then this will quickly become a how to guide that you can probably find elsewhere.

Quake 3 Cheats - Enable Give All Persistently

Question

I have disabled pure server to try out some of the built-in cheats. I like using '/give all' but as soon as you die you lose all weapons. Is there a way to persist this throughout an entire map, even after respawning?

Answer

You could bind it to a key (ie, in your client's config file, /bind keyname give all) and press the key every respawn, but that might get tedious.

If you want the server to do this for you, you're going to need a server-side mod, I believe. The stock game doesn't support things such as this.

I think you're going for a CTF server, but Rocket Arena (or more specifically, the Clan Arena mode) is pretty much what you're describing. Rocket Arena 3 for Quake 3 is one good mod for this.

Another option would be to try and tweak OSP Tourney mod (download link there is busted, try here instead) to do something similar. They have a Rocket Arena-style mode, and it's likely that there are options for spawning players with non-default loadouts.

Beryllium also looks promising, you can generate a config file online and download the mod from this site.

There may be other mods out there that are easier to use and come with more features that you'd like, but you're going to have to do some searching to find which one works the best for your situation.

How do I turn on “god” mode?

Question

Is there a cheat or hack to turn on god mode in Modern Warfare 3's Survival mode? I'm playing on a PC.

Answer

No, there are no cheats for Modern Warfare 3 survival mode. Further, Modern Warfare 3 uses Valve Anti-Cheat (VAC) on PCs, as well as having a dedicated hacker busting team, so if you do manage to find a cheat or hack online, I'd advise against using it, lest you find your XP reset, get banned from all things multiplayer in the game, or potentially worse!

Wolfenstein (2009) level skip

Question

Anyone know how to skip levels in Wolfenstein? I lost my savegame and want to skip to the airship bit. I'm on a PC

Thanks!

edit: I found this, which basically looks like it adds savegames from all levels to your directory structure then alters wolf.cfg and config.spec. I'll give it a go and post back here if it does the job.

Answer

This code is for the original version of Wolfenstein only and can be enabled at any time during the game by holding 'Back' and pressing A, Y, A, Y. If entered correctly you will go right to the end level status screen.

How do the Skylanders figurines work?

Question

What technologies do the Skylanders figurines use? NFC, Bluetooth, RFID, something homegrown?

What would it take to hack that? I don't want to buy all the figurines, but I want to experience the content.

I'm not trying to cheat other players, just experience the full gameplay available.

Answer

The figurines work through RFID, they've already been hacked by someone but he got and C&D from Activision so the project is pretty much dead.

Is there a cheat code for invincibility in SW: The Force Unleashed 2?

Question

Some parts of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2 are either ridiculously difficult -- that, or I'm painfully bad. Either way, I'm more of a play-to-see-the-story guy rather than a very avid gamer and I'd rather cheat my way through than spend days learning how to do it properly.

So my question is, is there a cheat code to make my guy invincible?

Answer

Checking both cheatcc and cheat code guides there doesnt seem to be an invincibility code, links below.

Do console commands affect Steam achievements?

Question

I've painted myself into a corner and am forced to choose between abandoning a couple hours' progress or cheating my way out of it. Unfortunately, I can't find hard data how if/how the use of console command affects the unlocking of Steam achievements.

I've heard a few conflicting theories and can think of a couple more:

  1. I have heard that using any console command, ever, permanently prevents that/all characters from unlocking achievements.
  2. I have heard that using any console command prevents you from unlocking any achievements for that "session" (variously, until you load a save or restart the game).
  3. It seems reasonable that certain console commands (such as tgm — Toggle God Mode) might prevent the unlocking of achievements while active and/or others (such as directly manipulating skills/perks/etc.) permanently block achievements for that character once used.
  4. It also seems possble that console commands have no effect on achievements whatsover (at least, I have not yet seen evidence to the contrary).

Do we have any hard info on this? Official sources, original research, anything?

Answer

Console commands do not affect achievements in Skyrim. I've used it to clip through places when I ended up falling and becoming stuck and still received achievements in the same session. I've also togged tgm on occasion while testing stuff and still received achievements after I finished testing without restarting my game.

Once you get past all the speculation, this thread seems to confirm that using console commands do not affect achievements at all.

Of note from that thread:

  • One person got the buy a house achievement right after giving himself 5000 gold via additem.
  • Another person still continued to receive achievements despite walking around with an max encumbrance weight of 5000 via modav.

How do you find the glitch Pokemon MissingNo in Pokemon Red/Blue?

Question

Back when I played pokemon Red/Blue edition there was a glitch where you went down to the edge of an island in the ocean and you would surf on the water up and down the edge of the island and you could find a weird pokemon that might mess up your game if you saved your game after catching it.

How do you find this Pokemon? What causes the glitch?

Answer

You were playing Pokemon Red or Blue, and this is known as the Missingno glitch. This glitch is rather interesting, so I'll include some details on how it works.

enter image description here

Essentially, there was an oversight in the code that made the right edge of Cinnibar Island (where there's the black-ish border) have some unique properties. It counts as a zone where wild Pokemon can spawn, but it also does not specify which Pokemon should spawn there. Because of this, it always uses the Pokemon that were in the last zone that you visited. Thus, it's useful for catching rare Safari Zone Pokemon, because you can battle them for real, putting them to sleep and damaging them, rather than relying on the luck of the Safari Ball.

But that's not enough to explain how Missingno came about. There's more to it. Here's where talking to the Weedle Man comes into play.

When you talk to the man in Viridian City who teaches you how to catch Pokemon by demonstrating on a Weedle, there are some interesting things done with the game's memory state. Pokemon uses all the memory available on the old Game Boy cartridges already. But at this point in the game, it wants the player's name to show as "OLD MAN" rather than whatever the player chose.

In order to do this, it must copy the player's name to an unused portion of memory. Namely: The area where the Pokemon spawn rates for the current zone are stored. Usually this hardly matters, because when you enter a new zone, those values will be overwritten by the ones for the new zone. But if you go straight to Cinnibar Island and ride up and down the coast, some weird things start happening.

Since it doesn't reset which wild Pokemon can spawn, and the last thing in that area of memory was your character's name, not a real spawn table, there are a whole variety of possible outcomes. Pokemon spawn higher than level 100. The Pokemon that spawn are random, depending on the characters in the player's name. And Missingno appears, when there is no real Pokemon corresponding to the data in the table.

What's the code to get 30 lives in the original Contra?

Question

On the 8-bit NES? You entered it with the controller.

Answer

The Konami code:

up up down down left right left right b a start

or for 2-player

up up down down left right left right b a select start

(technically, the "start" and "select, start" are not part of the code, but are necessary to start the game)
