Diablo II, Nightmare/Hell Mode, Undead Dolls

Question

I've been playing Diablo II as I do every 6 months or so and have wanted to know this for a number of years now:

In Kurast; when playing nightmare or hell mode; whenever I kill an undead doll it takes 60-90% of my health. What is this? How can I avoid it? It only happens when I'm using melee attacks to kill them.

The undead doll out of all enemies is practically the only enemy in the entire game that gives me issues, because of this.

Answer

The dolls/bone fetishes do an explosion, similar to the necromancers "corpse explosion" skill. It deals a huge amount of physical damage.

If you're a ranged player it should be easy to snipe them from the distance. If you're a melee character, go for -% physical damage gear, like Stormshield, Rockstopper, Vampire Gaze or other to reduce the damage. Also try to aim for high health (obviously).

AFAIK assassins can also block the explosion when they have a high "Weapon Block" skill. Still not something I would try though (at least not in hardcore mode :))

SC2 keeps asking for authenticator code (new 'intelligent' login feature not working anymore)

Question

I'm using Blizzard Authenticator and Starcraft II login screen prompts me each time to enter the code. Everything would appear to be fine, unfortunately it isn't:

Blizzard recently announced that they have updated the authentication system to intelligently track login locations and, if one is consistently connecting from the same place, may not be asked for an authenticator code.

That new feature worked flawlessly for a few days, but suddenly it stopped. Nothing changed in my machine, and I'm using the very same computer to play. I'm being prompted again to enter the code every time, even after watching a legacy replay.

I want to find out what's causing the problem. I would really appreciate any advice you may have.

UPDATE: I have a static IP (Sorry I didn't mention that sooner)

Answer

It's either because your IP address changed (which is likely if you haven't specifically purchased a static IP plan from your internet service provider) or it's been a week since you last authenticated:

From the the Blizzard WoW Forums:

your account no less secure than it was before, the only change is that you will only be prompted once a week to enter unless you change IP address, from where you'll need to enter your authenticator code.

Unfortunately, the Blizzard FAQ is worded in a way that sounds like he new functionality won't always trigger

The Authenticator system will now intelligently track your login locations, and if you are logging in consistently from the same location, you may not be asked for an authenticator code. This change was made to make the authenticator process less intrusive when we are sure the person logging in to your account is you.

Also, according to the EU FAQs, this isn't active for SC2 accounts at this time:

Please note that this feature is not yet live for StarCraft II accounts.

Are race usage statistics available to the public?

Question

Previously in the beta I heard Blizzard was making balance changes based on the usage % and win % of each race. I have no idea if this was true, but the idea intrigued me. Are there statistics available to the public?

I am very curious what the usage statistics for each race are.

Answer

If you used http://sc2ranks.com you could figure out which races are played in which division and which country by playing around with the filters and seeing how many hits you get back. Not every player is covered by this site but the good majority are.

Blizzard's SystemCheck tool doesn't work

Question

I'm trying to use Blizzard's SystemCheck tool to opt-in for future Blizzard game betas.

When I run it I see a page with my system information, but when I click "send" I get the error:

There was a problem sending your system information to Battle.net. Please check your internet connection, close all applications and try again. For further assistance, please visit Battle.net.

And in addition my browser opens on this page, which looks like an attempt to send me to a support page further explaining the problem, but it's actually just an error page.

The specific tool I am using is named SystemCheck_enUS.exe, downloaded recently from my personal account page on Battle.net. If it makes any difference, I'm running Windows 7 and I'm not located in North America.

Answer

Blizzard's troubleshooting page has this to say

Why is the Beta Opt-in application giving me an error message when I try to submit my information?

First, verify that you have a stable internet connection when attempting to access a website. If you are able to access websites, you may have a firewall preventing the information from being sent to us. Please make sure there are no firewall(s) blocking the opt-in application from sending us your system information. Downloading a fresh copy of the SystemCheck application may be the answer if you are still seeing a failure message after verifying the connection is stable.

Starcraft II Tech Tree in Battlenet

Question

After many many years of StarCraft 1 I've finally built up the courage to face possible disappointment in StarCraft 2 and bought myself a shiny new copy of it.

I've played my way through 10 or so campaign missions and am definitely not disappointed - the way they've stayed really close to the original is PERFECT.

However, I noticed something last night when I played online with a friend for the first time:

In single player, I have access to Medics and Goliaths. Terran is my favourite race to PvP with in SC1 and those are two key units of Terran in my opinion. In fact, without Medics; Terran is pretty pathetic until you work up to larger units.

In battlenet or custom games, I don't have access to Medics or Goliaths.. Am I missing something? Do I need to unlock them or something? Or are they just not available in anything other than the campaign?

Answer

So, Medics and Goliaths aren't in the SC2 multiplayer. Having played Broodwars before I can understand your disappointment. However, that doesn't mean Terran is under-powered.

Medics had an important role in the original Broodwar meta-game of helping you survive until you hit Factory Tech (or allowing +1 Bio timings). As a unit, they functioned to give Marines extra needed beef so they could survive Zergling/Hydralisk and Zealot/Dragoon. In SC2, this roll is replaced with the Marauder. The Marauder is an Armored unit with 125 HP and 1 Armor. This makes it ideal for dealing with fast attacking Zerglings and Zealots. In addition, it does double damage against Stalkers (Dragoon replacement) and Roaches (Hydralisk replacement as they were moved to Tier 2). The flip side is that they do very little cost effective DPS to Zerglings and Zealots (though they do have an upgrade which slows those units to make them easy prey for Marines). This allows for strong Marine/Marauder Bio pushes (usually off of 3 Barracks). Additionally, Marines have an upgrade called Combat Shield which give them an extra 10hp of Beef.

Between Combat Shield and Marauders, Blizzard didn't feel that Marines needed more beef in the tier 1 arena. However, because of the mechanic of Stim (same ability, but also applies to Marauders), they did add in the Medic as a tier 3 unit. Although, at tier 3 a simple Medic was too little, so they instead merged this unit with Dropships to form the Medivac. This unit allows the weaker Bio army to continue to function well into the late game.

Goliaths were another unit which was cut from SC2. While Marines still serve as a decent anti-air platform, they had neither the Range nor the heft of the Goliath. To compliment Marines, Thor's were added for Terran at the tier 3 level. The simplest explanation for Thors are that they're two Goliaths merged into one: twice the HP, twice the DPS, twice the cost (and twice the size!). However, because they are a tier 3 unit (and expensive) a second anti-air unit was added to the Terran army, the Viking. Vikings largely replace the Valkyrie in the tech tree, but function more similar to Goliaths than Valkyrie. Long Range (10), Single Target Anti-Air attacks that were once the trademark of the Goliath can now be found on this unit. In addition, it had the ability to transform into a land walker for ground to ground attack (providing additional harassment opportunities). While the Viking largely replaces the role of the Goliath, the Thor (strangely enough) gained the AoE of the Valkyrie, in addition to an impressive ground to ground attack (45x2). This allows them to function as a backbone for many late game Terran armies.

Things have changed between SC1 and SC2, but that doesn't mean that those roles have disappeared. With a little practice (and maybe a few VoDs), you'll start to pick up the differences between the two games.
