Where are Vita saves stored?

Question

I want to borrow some Vita games off a friend, I was wondering if I might need to overwrite his own saves.

With PS3/PSP games I know saves are stored on the device itself (since the game media is read only), but since Vita has its games on memory cards, is the saves on the game media itself? (Like GB/DS games)

Asked by JohnoBoy

Answer

Unfortunately, the answer is that it depends on the specific game.

From the PS Vita manual:

Two types of games are stored on PS Vita cards. One type saves data on the PS Vita card and the other type saves data on the memory card for the PS Vita system. To determine which is the case for a specific game, see the software manual for the game.

If you want details for a specific game, a lot of publishers now put their manuals online.

Can I combine PS3 controllers and PSVita remote play?

Question

I recently bought the Remote-Play enabled Pixeljunk Eden, and since I have one PS3 controller and one Vita, I was wondering how exactly remote play works (I'm interested in trying Eden's co-op).

Does everyone need to use Remote-Play, or must everyone? Is there a limit to the number of Remote-Play-ers, or are they just as good as having actual controllers? Does any of this vary by game?

Asked by Raven Dreamer

Answer

This is not how remote play works, it simply allows you to control the PS3 from the Vita from any location you have internet access.

Basically it displays what would have been on the TV screen on the Vita Screen but not every game supports this feature. You can however switch the PS3 on from standby and access the XMB.

Two player is not possible via remote play unless it is online.

Most convenient method to switch between PSN accounts to access PS Vita content from different Playstation Stores?

Question

I have a Japanese PSN account, as well as a US PSN account. On my PS3, I get the best of both world since I have access to Japanese Playstation Store as well as US Playstation Store. I can purchase and download new region specific demos and games, and use them from my both accounts.

I want to do the same on my PS Vita. However, it seems we do not have that much freedom on PS Vita. First of all, I cannot add a second Playstation account on PS Vita, therefore I cannot directly access a second store. I tried to download contents on my PS3 first, and then to send it to my PS3 : I obtained an error message telling me I could not do this because my PS3 Vita account was not the owner of that content.

I think there are two methods to get content from both Playstation Stores : - 1 : format my PS Vita and recreate the account info (as well as network connections info, etc) for the other region every time I want to use content from a different region - 2 : buy a new PS Vita Memory Card and save my alternate account information on this card, then save region specific content on this card. When I want to switch region, I then need to change the small memory card (so small.. hope I won't break it.. Or lose it) Am I correct ? Are there any restrictions or problems with these methods ? Is there a more clever or convenient way of switching between accounts ?

Thanks for any suggestion !

Answer

You can have two different memory cards, one for each user, but you will need to do a factory reset each time you swtich your memory cards, see the following video, courtesy of IGN:

How do I beat Galactus?

Question

I've managed to get to the final boss in offline mode pretty easily, but Galactus is just kicking my butt. I don't even quite know if my attacks are doing damage at all, and he usually wipes me out in 1-2 hits. Since he isn't like a standard fight (as he's HUGE), the usual tricks doesn't that well on him. What are some common strategies I should be looking out for when fighting him?

Asked by yx.

Answer

IGN has a section in their wiki about how to defeat Galactus, as well as a video. These ideas seem kind of simple, but apparently this is a strategy that works, even on very hard.

PS Vita Import / purchase overseas

Question

I'm travelling soon and am considering buying a (much cheaper there) Playstation Vita to bring back home.

Will I have any issues using an imported Vita at home?

Will I be able to:

  • configure it to use English?
  • connect it to my local PSN store and buy games / download my PSP titles?
  • play locally-released physical games?

If it helps, I live in Australia and I'm travelling to Japan.

Asked by YellowMegaMan

Answer

I bought my PS Vita in Taiwan on release day (23/12/2011), and live in London where it was a 2 month wait before the UK release (22/2/2012). Everything is fully region-free, you choose the language on initial setup. Everything worked perfectly, even the voice-over for Welcome Park was in English.

The PSN store is linked to the location of your PSN account, meaning if you use your Australian account you will connect to the Australian store. This applies for all other services which use PSN. As I bought mine before the UK release, it meant I couldn't access the UK store until the UK release, but now everything works as expected.

Physical games are region-free too. Enjoy!

How does PS Vita work with PS1/PSP games?

Question

What do PS1 and/or PSP games look like on the PS Vita? Do they fill the screen?

Also since the PSP has only one analog stick, for PSP games like Monster Hunter where they used the PSPs face buttons as a analog stick replacement - if I play them on the Vita, can I use the second analog stick? Or do I have to use the face buttons?

Will the games play the same as they did on the older system? Or will there be changes to conform to the new system?

Asked by somdow

Answer

PSP games can be upscaled and bilinearly filtered to the Vita's full resolution of 960x544. Also, the colorspace can be changed to brighter colors to take better advantage of the Vita's OLED screen.

The second analog stick is configurable in PSP games to emulate any of the left analog stick, the face buttons, or the d-pad.

Can I get PSP DLC onto my Vita?

Question

I have a couple PSP games (Disgaea 2 and Prinny: Can I really Be The Hero?) where I had DLC on my PSP but the DLC is not available on the PSN for Vita.

Is there some way I can copy the DLC from the PSP onto the Vita sort of like you can with save files?

Asked by Ben Brocka

Answer

You can install it via a PS3, if you have one. Just download the DLC to the PS3 and install it to the Vita using the content manager.

How can I move my PSP game saves onto my PS Vita?

Question

I have an old PSP and a PS3 and PC. I have a bunch of PSP game saves for PSN games (patapon ect) that I would like to move over to my Vita because they work on the Vita.

How can I move my PSP's save files onto my Vita?

Asked by Ben Brocka

Answer

Copying your PSP save data

Plug your PSP into your PC with a Mini USB cable (the kind that fits into the top of your PSP) and select the USB Connection option in the PSP System menu.

The PSP should show up as a connected drive in your My Computer menu. It's probably called "Removable Disk" if you're on Windows. Open that drive and navigate to the PSP folder.

Copy the SAVEDATA folder onto your PC somewhere like you Desktop. That folder has all your PSP saves and we'll copy them to the PS Vita soon. If you're concerned about how much space the data will take up on your PS Vita, check how large this SAVEDATA folder is, you're about to copy that much data onto your Vita. If it's too large, we can only copy the specific games you want the data for later.

Prepare your PS Vita to copy the files

Download any one PSP game onto your Vita and play it enough to generate a save file. Any game will do, it doesn't have to be a game you want to copy the save data for.

Install the PS Vita Content Manager Assistant for Windows or Mac OSX.

Connect your Vita to your PC with the USB cable and open up the content manager. Pick Copy Content: PS Vita System -> PC -> Applications -> Save Data (PSP/Other).

You should see the game you played earlier in a list; tap the PSP game to select it and hit copy. Click Okay to copy it onto your PC.

Find the folder on your PC the Vita copied to; it should be in your Documents folder in a folder named PS Vita, in that folder there's a folder called PSAVEDATA. In that should be a single folder named with random letters and numbers. Open that folder; this is where we're going to copy the PSP Save Data.

Copy the files onto your Vita

Open up the SAVEDATA folder from earlier, those are your PSP saves. Also open the PS Vita folder we mentioned before that has your PS Vita's copy of the save files (you want to be inside the folder with the name that's random letters/numbers). Copy and past ALL folders from the SAVEDATA folder into the folder named with random letters. Say Yes to any dialogs that ask if you want to merge/copy files; this means you're overwriting the Vita's copy of the save file with the PSP one.

Now just open Content Manager on the Vita again and pick Copy Content: PC -> PS Vita System. Pick Applications -> Saved Data again. You should now see all of your PSP save data. I recommend hitting Select All and just copying all of this data over. You can also pick and choose just the games' data you want to copy over if you want to save yourself some space.

Pick Copy and hit Okay again, it will ask you if you want to overwrite any data you have on the PS Vita for the PSP games; you want to do this, so click Apply to All and tap Overwrite.

Your PS Vita now has all save data from your PSP and you can keep it there forever, and it's also stored with your PS Vita backup. Any time you download a PSP game onto that Vita, it will start with the save data you copied from your old PSP, no need to repeat this for each game!

Can I hide PS Vita friend notifications?

Question

The notifications that pop up when your friends come online are very disruptive. Is there any way to turn off the notifications while remaining signed in? I didn't see any such option in the Friends or Settings apps.

Asked by Ben Brocka

Answer

Currently, there is no way to do this. You can turn off the notification light and sound in settings but cannot physically turn off the notification. This is, however, a feature that is being discussed on the PS Vita forums to be suggested for future software releases.

Purchasing PSVITA game / and its digital counterpart

Question

I purchased Uncharted and Rayman as my first two games for the Vita. Already I find it annoying to have to keep going back to my bag to get the game I want to play, whereas if I just installed it or digitally downloaded it to the memory card, I could just launch it. (Lazy, I know. lol)

My question is, if I buy a physical game, can I download it free from the PSN store, or is there a way to install it on the system itself from the PSV cartridge? I wouldn't mind trying it myself, but I don't want to make a mistake and buy it a second time.

Asked by somdow

Answer

No, possession of the retail copy does not automatically grant you access to its PSN digital version.

Currently, none of the PS Vita games are known to be installable and played directly and solely from system's internal memory or memory card (although many games require the presence of memory card for storing game-related content and save data).

Are all PSN PSP games compatible with PS Vita?

Question

It is well known the PS Vita is not backwards compatible with any UMD-based PSP games, as it uses a different, not compatible storage media. Sony also confirmed that PSP games purchased through PSN's PlayStation Store will be compatible with PS Vita.

My question is: are all PSN PSP games compatible with PS Vita? If not, which games are specifically NOT compatible with Vita (preferably a list)?

Thanks!

Asked by sarmackie

Answer

No sorry, but Sony have said they are aiming to make as many compatible as possible. Heres a list of all the initially compatible games.

I found this FAQ which answers a few questions but I'm not sure if this is the definate answer you were looking for. It says (about half way down):

Q: Is PS Vita compatible with other PlayStation platform games like PS3, PS2, or PSP? Do you have any plan to support other PlayStation platforms in the future?

A: Users can play PSP titles, minis and PSone classics titles which are offered on PS Store. We do no have any plans to make PS Vita compatible with PS3 or PS2 titles at this point.

Q: Is PS Vita compatible with PSP content other than games such as video and comics available on PlayStation Store?

A: SCE plans to make those content available on PS Vita.

Q: Can PS Vita users continue using their save data for PSP games that they have also downloaded from PlayStation Store to PS Vita?

A: We are looking into the opportunity to do so.

The bolded would suggest no, only confirmed titles would be supported however this is really vague and still doesn't completely prove or disprove that the use unsupported games will work. However Sony have already said UMDs aren't supported and if the only way to get the PSP games onto your Vita is through the store then I highly doubt any unofficially supported games will work.

Sorry for not providing any concrete definiative sources I just couldn't find any.

Why is my PSVita not charging through the USB port on my PC?

Question

I want to charge my Vita via my PC's USB port. When I connect it, it hooks up to the PC and I can transfer items back and forth, but it does not charge.

I looked around and saw a few posts saying that you have to enable it in the options, which I did but still it doesn't work.

My USB 2.0/3.0 ports work for charging since I also charge other things, such as my iPod, iPhone, etc.

Is anyone else having problems charging the Vita from a PC?

Asked by somdow

Answer

The Vita's battery is 2200 mAh, so charging it on a USB 2.0 port (max 500 mA) would take almost 4.5 hours if it was off, which isn't great. If it's on, its power consumption rate can get up to about the same as that charging rate, so you wouldn't be doing much except turning the battery into a bomb.

According to this the Vita's charger is rated at 1500 mA, and other chargers are 2000 mA. This is significantly more that the USB 2.0 maximum or USB 3.0 max (900 mA) (source). As Resorath says, that must just not be enough.

Downloading games to PSVita from other stores than the Japanese

Question

Is it possible to download PSVita games to an imported device without using a Japanese account? That is, before its launched in EU for example.

Answer

I can confirm the US and EU stores are not live. Attempting to access the PSN store with a US profile on a Vita as of 12/31/2010 will encounter a cannot connect error until they are launched along side the Vita rollouts in those markets.
