How does Carcassonne (iPad) calculate its Elo rating?

Question

In playing Carcassonne for the iPad I've been very curious how the Elo for a player is calculated, and by what means it is adjusted at the end of a game. I have played games where I have tied with the AI at the end of the game, but the Elo distribution was different. How it is calculated?

Asked by fbrereto

Answer

Wikipedia has an extensive article on the Elo rating system.
Also it should be Elo not ELO because it's named after Arpad Elo.

How do you make more than 700,000 points?

Question

I'm wondering how to reach more than 700,000 points in contests. I usually get the ball with the long aimer and perform like 40-45 extra clean shot.

This seems to be the best setting to me. But i really cannot get how people could get 900,000 or even 1,000,000+ how is that possible?

Asked by Jeffrey

Answer

If your getting clear up to 700,000 you wont find any 'try this advice'... Chances are you have the right idea but just need to work on your timing. As with any other game that takes timing: its all about practice, being in the zone, and just plumb getting lucky!

The more often you play, the better your sense of timing will be and the more clean shots you can pull off. Some day, perhaps over a delicious cup of morning coffee, you may break the million point mark.

How is scoring calculated in Tilt to Live?

Question

In the game Tilt To Live for Iphone, you get points for killing red dots. If you can kill several of them in a short period of time, you can build combos that quickly increase your score.

As far as I can tell, each time you complete a combo, two numbers are multiplied to calculate your score. What do these 2 numbers mean?

Asked by Julien

Answer

You receive a certain amount of score for killing a red dot or collecting a powerup. This value increases by differing amounts depending on whether or not you killed a dot, or collected a powerup, and is the first number in the set. Of note is the fact that different power ups give you different scores.

The second number is the score multiplier, and increases by 1 every time you do either, within the time-out limit of the combo.

Therefore, in the example below:

      [ COMBO 48 x 3 ]

'48' is the base score you have received from your heroic actions over the course of that particular multiplier, but before multiplication. The '3' represents your current multiplier. If you fail to continue the combo in a short enough amount of time, that is what your current combo score (48) will be multiplied by, and the combo ended.

Are there any tactics for Bejeweled Blitz?

Question

I average a score of ~60,000 on Bejeweled Blitz for iPhone, yet I see a lot of my friends posting scores of over 250,000.

Are there any tactics for achieving such a high score, or is it really just down to finger speed, and/or luck?

Asked by Chris

Answer

The primary answer here is speed, but there's more to it than that.

  • Keep your speed up, making matches, so you'll continue to recieve an ever increasing speed bonus. Your goal here is to get to the x1000 speed bonus where every match creates an explosion (and the gems flash) - but any speed is better than no speed at all.
  • Make matches from the bottom up, there's more chance of a cascade
  • Be aware of the multiplier gems - a match has to cause a cascade that removes 12 tiles (and more than 10s apart from the previous muliplier gem). So, make those cascades and grab the multiplier gems early.
  • Don't plan out your next move too much. This is Blitz, remember? 60s is not enough time to ponder the inner-workings of cascades.
  • Do look for more matches ASAP. That is, as soon as you locate a match and begin to drag it, start too look for the next.
  • Remember that you have a Hint button - but that it takes a few seconds to locate, move to it, and click.
  • Do purchase power-ups. With one of the lastest updates, you can purchase powerups like multipliers in the field as you start, gem-swappers, and extra time. In my personal experience, the gem-swapping and extra-time are the most valuable to my score.
  • If/when you do create a 5-in-a-row match and obtain a HyperCube, you should use it ASAP, on the color that you see the most of. This should create many cascades, up your speed bonus, and with fewer colors on the map, it should be easier to create your next match. (Remember that 5-in-a-row is the most valuable, so don't waste the opportunity on anything else).

Don't forget that if you really want to be a bejeweled-blitz-master, you'll need to do the following:

  • Practice practice practice
  • Watch Youtubes
  • Read up other guides

What is a Lagrangian point, and how can I get a bird into one?

Question

After looking up what Lagrangian point meant, I'm pretty sure I'm more confused about what it is. It seems to mean that it's some sort of point in between 2 planets or objects in spaces where a third object would maintain an orbit. Then again, I'm no astronomer.

More importantly, how and on which level of Angry Birds: Space can I get a bird into a Lagrangian point? I ask all this because there is a Game Center achievement called Centripetal Force: Shoot a bird into a lagrangian point, which I'm trying to get.

Asked by Doozer Blake

Answer

A Lagrangian point is a point between two large bodies where if you place a small body with negligible influence on the two larger bodies (such as, say, a satellite between the Sun and the Earth), the gravitational force exerted by the two large bodies is equal in magnitude and opposite in direction such that they cancel each other out, thus enabling the small object to stay in equilibrium in that position in space relative to the bigger object.

Now, that's for real life - in Angry Birds Space, gravitation works somewhat differently - unlike in real life where the gravitational field created by masses reaches infinity, gravity wells in Angry Birds Space only covers a certain area - an area that is conveniently marked out for you with a blue circle. As mentioned above, a Lagrangian point is a point between two larger bodies. In game, this translates to looking out for an area where two different gravity wells intersect.

The map which is most convenient to do this is 2-19, where you are given three large green birds to fire at three planets with significant amount overlapping gravity well to work with. Shoot the bird at the top of the building on the first planet, and the bird should slow down enough to hit the overlapping region between the two planets and hopefully stop there.

NB: I'm playing this on the Android version of Angry Birds Space, so there's no achievements, and thus no way to actually test if this actually will give you the achievement, other than that it fits your description

Update

The latest update of Angry Birds Space fixes a bug and makes this achievement not only possible, but incredibly easy. A bird now only needs to pass through the intersection of two gravity fields to gain the achievement.

How is money and score calculated in Zombieville USA 2?

Question

I repeatedly do the same levels over again and sometimes I get around $400 and other times I get $190.

I currently have the Daddy Warbucks perk maxed to 5 stars but it doesn't seem to make that much of a difference.

I'm unsure with how the game scores kills and distance and I would like to know how this is calculated.

Asked by ROCKZ

Answer

I don't know about cash, but score is easily calculated. Every zombie you kill sets a multiplier, shown at the top left. The more zombies you kill in a short time without getting hit, the higher the multiplier will go. Say, you kill 3 zombies in a short time? Multiplier is 4. (I assume you already know this, but never hurts to be sure.)

At the easiest level (one star), each zombie is worth three points. This goes for the normal, the running, and the spitting zombies (Basically the ones with yellow eyes, excepting the boomer.). For every star you go above that, 2 points are added to a single zombie. So, for example, if I run the 4 star level (Southtown Mall), I'll get 9 points, times the multiplier, for each zombie. So say I kill ten zombies before the multiplier before the multiplier runs down. That's equivalent to killing 55 zombies (1+2+3...+10) when you only killed 10. That means you get 45*9=405 more points. SCORE!

The fat zombies get more points. The hulks (the ones with red eyes) double your points for a single zombie (so for the ex. above, they score 18 times the multiplier), while the boomers (the ones with odors) seem to add five points (on a level with 11 point zombies, they score 16).

For money, I don't have a direct formula, but there is almost no correlation between distance traveled/health/accuracy and money. It is true that the farther you travel, the more containers you'll see and the more money you'll get from them. But it turns out this gets beaten out by killing zombies (and thus score) with the new update. Case in point: I kill 100 zombies on Broadway (the 5 star level), while only traveling about 250 yards. This nets me about twice as much money as if I just ran for my life, smashing all the containers along the way, traveling 700+ yards and only killing ~10 zombies. (That run, I got $2000 vs. $1100.)

And Daddy Warbucks actually does do shit. I say this b/c with Daddy Warbucks (5 star), what was once 1600 is now 2000! You'd be surprised how much 400 extra dollars gets you.

So that's my spiel. Honestly, the best advice I have for you is kill zombies. Trust me on this one. Hope all this helps. ^v^

What is a good strategy for quickly earning money in Plants vs. Zombies on the iPhone?

Question

I'm trying to collect all the achievements in Plants vs. Zombies on the iPhone. I need lots of money to buy all the plants so I've been trying to work out a way to basically farm some money in the game. I've tried using Marigolds and the Magnet with a bunch of Tall-Nuts to slow the last few zombies down considerably, but the Marigolds only spawn money a few times before stopping.

Asked by spilth

Answer

For the iPhone version i recommend using Marigolds on lvl 1.1 (only the base zombie)

Basically you want to set up 3 lanes of marigolds with a single garlic at the front to divert the zombie into the other 2 lanes.

I hope this unicode art makes sense

┌─┬─┬─┬─┬─┬─┬─┬─┬─┐
│S│M│M│M│M│M│M│M│G│ ← Z
├─┼─┼─┼─┼─┼─┼─┼─┼─┤
│P│T│W│ │ │ │ │ │ │ ← Z
├─┼─┼─┼─┼─┼─┼─┼─┼─┤
│S│X│M│M│M│X│M│M│G│ ← Z
├─┼─┼─┼─┼─┼─┼─┼─┼─┤
│P│T│W│ │ │ │ │ │ │ ← Z
├─┼─┼─┼─┼─┼─┼─┼─┼─┤
│S│M│M│M│M│M│M│M│G│ ← Z
└─┴─┴─┴─┴─┴─┴─┴─┴─┘

Legend:

  • S = Sunflower/TwinSunflower
  • M = Marigold
  • P = Peashooter
  • G = Garlic
  • X = Gold Magnet shrooms
  • T = Tallnuts
  • W = Spikeweeds

The idea is to slow do how you kill the zombies. So as quickly as possibly place the garlics to direct the zombies into the two lanes that are protected. After the initial setup, it's just a matter of place the marigolds as quickly as possibly.

EDIT: I should have said that you place the gold magnet shrooms so thank you get automatic coin collection, having two means less chance of a miss.

What can change the world?

Question

I'm stuck on page 28 of chapter/episode 2 of Imaginary Range and I need an item to continue. It says:

Look for an item hidden in the floating castle frame that can change the world

I checked the earlier pages, especially the ones with floating islands, and I didn't find any obvious items to pick up.

What item do I need to continue and where do I find it?

Asked by Ben Brocka

Answer

Apparently on page 22 there's a floating PAD blueprint. It's in the panel where someone is saying "No, I've got something else in mind for you."

It's green with a golden PAD dagger in the middle, in the right of the frame. It looks sort of like part of the scene, but it's not. Circle it with your finger to pick it up and use it at page 28 and you can continue.

Which level is best to get the mountaineer badge

Question

I'm trying to get all the badges on Mirror's Edge for iPhone and the only one I'm missing is the mountaineer one (climb 1,000 meters)

I was thinking that level 5-2 (“Underground”) could be a good fit to get it, but I can't seem to find a couple of pipes close and long enough to do the climbing.

Is there a better level to achieve the mountaineer badge? (maybe some of the ones with elevator holes).

Asked by maeghith

Answer

Ok, I had a hunch with 3-2 (“Jailbreak”) and got the badge just by climbing from the “Scruffy was here” graffiti to the top of that elevator hole.

But as I've climbed that part a couple of times before and didn't get the badge, it hit me then that the distance for the badge was accumulative. (just like other similar badges like running 10km, ziplining 1km, falling 1km, etc… Doh!).

So just for curiosity's sake, I went back to 5-2 and found the perfect place on the 3rd or 4th water pump:

http://imgur.com/a/O8tTd

As you can see on the 2nd image, there's a gap at the top, between the upper platform and the pipe, then at the bottom there's a ramp you can fall safely without getting any damage (3rd image), so you can climb and fall as you please until you get the badge.

What do the tour groups want?

Question

In Oh! Edo Towns, tour groups come and stay at your inns. How do you unlock more tour groups, and what does each group need in order to accomplish their task?

Asked by Derpy Hooves

Answer

How do you unlock more tour groups?

The best answer I could find is from this blog and seems to have been copy-pasted all over the web. However, the author admits that these may not be completely accurate.

  • Elementary School Trip – available from start
  • Heartbreak Club – available from start
  • Ogre Vanquishing Tour – available from start
  • Nation-Wide Tour – unlocked when the Komon Combo is created?
  • Govt. Inspection Tour – unlocked when total Yield is greater than 50,000? (Maybe between 50,000 – 60,000?)
  • Ako Clan Samurai – 30,000 Yield and unlock the Samurai House.
  • Friendship Alliance – unlocked after Edomae Combo is created?
  • Prince’s Secret Tour – ???
  • Pumpkin Products PR – unlocked from Traveler combo?
  • Gas Survey Tour – unlocked after obtaining the option to research the Elekiter Shop?
  • New Home Search Team – Have a total of 3 Zoos (anywhere on the map).
  • Kairobot’s Journey – unlocked after placing all 46 unique combos on the map and reaching 50 years.

What do they need to accomplish their task?

My experience has been that their percentage complete rises over time as the group visits shops and spends money.

I found one guide that claimed "Having crafts and combos through building placements will attract more visitors," but it's not clear how they arrived at that conclusion, so I'd take it with a grain of salt.

Pocket Academy - How do I pick a good event planner?

Question

When the yearly event comes up, I have to pick a student to plan it. The interface shows me the basic stats of each student, but nowhere does it explain which stats might contribute to success.

I assume popularity plays a role, since the "planning" consists of talking to the other students and convincing them to participate. I also thought that other stats might make a difference, depending on the event (e.g. athleticism for a baseball event). However, I don't have any actual evidence to confirm or deny these hypotheses.

So, what makes a student a good event planner?

Asked by sjohnston

Answer

From this site (registration required):

  • Leader nature - Seems to improve the amount of research points that are generated during the event
  • High popularity - Increases the number of students the organizer will talk to in the halls
  • High number of friends - Increases the likelihood of other students participating in the event after talking to the organizer.
  • Not in a couple - Students in couples will talk to each other more often, which will decrease the number of people the organizer is able to talk to about the event.

Do I lose my power ups in Infinity Field?

Question

Playing campaign mode I got a ship "Upgrade" for 2000 credits. Now I got a game over, and "Upgrade" is available for 2000 credits again. Looking at the shop, items like Extra Life cost as much as Power Ups.

Do power ups only last one life? One Game Over? Or do I keep them? I'm not sure if I kept my ship upgrade or not.

Asked by Ben Brocka

Answer

All items purchased via the Store menu are lost upon a game over. These are Power Ups, Bombs and Extra Lives. Also, power ups seem to expire after a time limit as well, not just when you die.

Upgrades purchased through the Upgrade/Manage menus are permanent upgrades for the ship type you're using, you never lose them. You should max out your upgrades before buying power ups and extra ships as Upgrades are relatively cheap for significant benefit.

How do I hire a friend?

Question

I'm experimenting with We Rule, but at level 6 I have an objective to:

'Hire your friend'

Now I don't have any friends, so what am I supposed to do?

Asked by Ivo Flipse

Answer

Well the jackass answer is find a friend to play the game with. Another idea is if you have Facebook, post a status message asking for anyone who has the game, but that is putting yourself out on Facebook which may not be desirable. You could also find people via the Facebook We Rule Page and post on the discussion board there.

Developers put objectives like "Hire your friend' or 'Give a gift to a friend' (a la Farmville) as a marketing and expansion tool. By completing the objective, it expands the game's user base and maximum possible revenue for the developer.

Can I play across platforms?

Question

I got Tiny Tower for Android thinking I'd be able to continue my tower I started in iOS. But I don't see any option and I don't think I have an online account linked to my tower.

Is there any way to play my tower cross-platform or can I not do that?

Asked by Ben Brocka

Answer

Unfortunately, the game does not run cross-platform.

On iOS, if you have a Game Center account, your game is tied to it, which is why you can get your Tiny Tower game on multiple iOS devices. Obviously, you do not have Game Center on an Android device, so you won't have access to your game.

How do I minimize Dragonvale load time?

Question

I have an iPhone 4s, and most games load pretty quick. In addition, most games load instantly once they are in memory (ie one of my last 4 or so apps loaded). In contrast, with Dragonvale I get a load screen almost every time I lock my phone, or switch apps. Does anyone else have this problem? Is it just expected, or is there a way to reduce/eliminate it? If relevant, I am still running iOS 5.0.1.

Asked by EBongo

Answer

Dragonvale used to have major load-time issues, so make sure you're on the latest version. It used to load the game twice, and it reloaded every time another app opened. I don't think iOS 5.1 is required for the latest updates, but I'd still recommend it.

However, it sounds like your specific problem is because "loading" Dragonvale actually happens from their servers; it's thus dependent on your internet connection speed. Slow internet will cause slow Dragonvale loading.

Playing it at home on WiFi is probably the best way to make sure the game loads quickly, but it still depends on your internet speed.

Is there a way to “teleport” in the iPhone version of Secret of Mana?

Question

In the original SNES version of Secret of Mana, there was a really neat trick which allowed you to teleport your party to almost any other location in the game. By saving your gave in a very specific spot on the world map, switching to a different game (even a new game), getting to the location you wanted to teleport to, doing an in-game reset, and loading the original game, you would find your characters from the first game file at the location your second game was at when you performed the in-game reset.

I just tried on the iPhone version of Secret of Mana and this is not possible, because the island you have to land on to perform this trick has changed. It's shape is different and you can no longer land on it!

SNES Version screen capture:

Screencap of island to land on

IPhone version screen capture:

Island is a different shape! And you can't land on it!

Is there a way to perform this teleport trick on the iPhone version of Secret of Mana?

Asked by Josh

Answer

Josh, it does not matter if you will argue to the death that this is a "feature" not a "bug", as it was clearly considered a bug by the developers. Also, from your description it really sounds like a bug to me personally.

Now, to adress your question itself: No, there is no known way to "teleport" your party like it was possible with that glitch.

Is it better to not buy some upgrades in Temple Run?

Question

Buying most upgrades gives the chance that they will appear as you run. What is unclear to me is whether I can influence the likelihood that I'll get a given powerup by NOT buying the others. The other possibility is that not buying a powerup just means there is a blank spot where I would have gotten that powerup.

Asked by EBongo

Answer

Having bought all of the powerups, I can say that they all appear with the same frequency. It does not appear that you can influence the appearance rate. There will not be a blank spot in place of the powerup.
