Question
Back in the 80's or early 90's, I used to go to this local arcade which had a racing game that was something like this:
- It had a fully covered cockpit with a driver's seat, gears and a steering wheel. It didn't have doors, so you could enter/exit from either side.
- The screen was a vertical one - 3:4 ratio
- The gear was just a flip - high and low.
- There were no turns in the game, AFAIK. It just kept going on in a straight line.
- Occasionally, there'd be a safety car which you had to be careful of bumping into.
- The unique part: Periodically, I suppose the cars would go through a tunnel, in which the whole screen would turn black and you'd only be able to see a few feet ahead of the car in a heart-shaped headlight projection. It was very tricky to maneuver the car in this mode, because you'll only see the car in front of you if it came within a few feet ahead of you in the headlight projection.
The cockpit looked similar to this, but without a flat screen, obviously: askalexia.com/wp-content/uploads//2008/08/gt5p-pod-230808.jpg

Yes, this is a screen-shot of some other recent game - I'm just using it as a mock. The 80's game was a little lower-res than this! :-)
Thanks for your help!
Update: It could be Sega Monaco GP as mentioned in the responses, but if you read my comment, you'll know why I haven't picked it as an answer...
Update 2: I think this is it! http://linkbun.ch/4y8l
Answer
Sounds like Sega's Monaco GP cab - there were upright and sit-down versions.
