Question
I'm trying to identify a PC game I used to play in the 90's. Here's what I can remember:
- Set in a futuristic world.
- Gameplay revolved around driving "cars" in a city grid/matrix from a top-down perspective.
- A lot of the driving experience was based around managing your velocity and momentum.
- The graphics and engine were in 2D.
- Each mission would let you pick what kind of car you'd want to drive.
- Some "cars" actually looked sort of like spaceships, but they "flew" just above the ground in between tightly packed buildings.
- The cars had guns that could shoot out in front of them.
- The graphics were kind of dark with browns and grays. Not a lot of bright colors.
- The plot involved the bad guy dying but ending up being cloned or something.
- In one mission, you're attempting to drive a slow truck with a bomb in it without getting hit too much and therefore exploding.
- Even though it had cars and streets, there wasn't much if any racing.
Here's a sweet sketch I made:
Any ideas? Thanks, guys!
Answer
I'm almost 100% sure you described Traffic Department 2192. Great game & involved cloning & truck bombs.
The only thing that differs is the ability to pick the vehicle before the mission. I can remember it having missions where you drove a lot of different vehicles, but I don't think it let you pick them.

The game featured a large amount of dialogue (which could be turned on to child-friendly mode), a story about revenge & terrorism!, & a robot bartender. Lots of dark environments in the "cut-scenes" with blacks, browns, blues, & purple.
