How to buy a graphics card?

Question

I want to buy a graphics card, currently looking for Nvidia 9500GT 1GB as it is cheap (for me) with big memory (1GB).
As there are variety of cards available i dont know which one is better and how that one is better.

Should i look for its memory size? (1 GB, 512 MB etc) Should i check for its technology and ignore its memory? (GT, XT etc .. i dont know much about these) Its RAM? (DDR2, DDR3) Its price?

Is a higher price graphics cards always better than with lower one?

Please correct if i am mistaken.

EDIT: I like to play all new games with good performance

Answer

Another option if best bang for your buck is what your interested in is http://www.pcpartcharts.com/filterGpus.php. This allows you to rank graphics cards by performance, by price and by cost-effectiveness for those of us with a budget.
