How often should I 's'earch

Question

I've started to play Brogue (never played other roguelikes more than a couple of hours) and I'm a little confused to how often should I search for traps/secret doors.

In some points I must do it in order to reach the stairs, but otherwise I may spend 5-10 turns searching in suspicious rooms just to find nothing, or even while walking through corridors I may search every other turn. Am I doing it right?

Answer

In Brogue, it appears that searching is not limited to just adjacent squares, but rather it affects a fair distance around you - perhaps even the entire room. As such, it is a lot easier to find hidden doors than in other games, and fewer search checks need to be made.

As far as the frequency, at least in early dungeon levels the levels seem designed such that there's always a path to the exit, no matter how many chasms, lava pools, or lakes may be present. So if it looks like the only way to advance is to cross flaming pits of fire, it is more likely there's a secret door in some room. Again, because you can search at a wide range, it's a lot easier.

I've also discovered that secret doors are more likely to be in rooms than in passageways. Searching every other step is unnecessary, and even if you must search corridors, it should only take a couple turns to check a wide range of the corridor at once before your search efforts are complete. Overall, the "search intensity" is much lower than in other roguelikes.
