Question
I remember playing this old space game while I was a kid. I can't remember if I played it through DOS or if it was after that. I think it started on a spaceship though I know sometimes the character was on a planet. I can hardly remember anything about it though I do know I moved around (with the arrow keys?) and I think it was more of a puzzle game that an action/adventure game.
I do kind of remember the level I was stuck on. I know I was on a planet and there was this weird (white?) octopus like alien. It's tentacles were spread out over the ground and you had to walk through them to the other side like it was a maze.
Does anyone have any clue what this game might have been?
Answer
This sounds like Space Quest 2.
Roger, despite his newfound status as hero, is transferred to the Xenon Orbital Station 4 and promoted to Head (and only) Janitor. All is quiet until he is abducted by Sludge Vohaul.
As Roger is being transported to the Labion labour mines as punishment for thwarting Sludge's original plan, the prison ship crash-lands in a nearby jungle upon the planet. He manages to escape his pursuers and the dangers of the Labion jungle and soon reaches Sludge's asteroid base. Once again, it is up to Roger alone to stop Vohaul's evil plan: to eradicate sentient life from Xenon by launching millions of cloned insurance salesmen at the planet!
I think this is the part you're talking about:
The trick to this section is to move slowly, and tapping the arrow keys and trying not to step on the alien's tentacles. It's a slow process, but it's doable. I feel like there's a "walk" or "slow" mode that makes everything a little easier.
Good Old Games sells a DRM free version of all of the Space Quest games, if you want to replay it. There's also a fan-made VGA remake on this page.
