Need help identifying game where you play as a monkey/ape

Question

I need some help finding a game that was one of my favourites growing up in the 80's. The main (your) character is turned into sort of a monkey in the prologue and your girlfriend is stolen. You can shoot little round balls out of your mouth and I think there were upgrades to that skill.

It was 2D platform I think and played on an arcade machine at the local shop.

I think the name had some X's or V's in it, but can't seem to find it on the Wikipedia's list of games.
