Need help identifying game please - You play a monkey/ape ? (NOT monkey Island)

Question

I need some help finding a game that was one of my favourites growing up in the 80's. The main (your) character is turned into sort of a monkey in the prologue and your girlfriend is stolen. You can shoot little round balls out of your mouth and I think there were upgrades to that skill ?

It was platform i think.. 2d.. and played on an arcade machine at the local shop.

Sorry to be so vague. I think the name had some X's or V's in it, but cant seem to find it on the wiki list of games!
