Question
I'm trying to remember the name of a game I played, I think, 6-7 years ago (2004-2005), on the PC. It was a spaceship racing game, You had to go trough checkpoints in a 3D environment, mostly above a planet but sometimes in space too. You could go in any direction, and rotate your ship as you please. You could also shoot on your opponent to slow them down or even destroy them.
The was no track, just a set of checkpoint to go trough in the right order. I also remember that their was different kind of vehicles, divided between antigravity ships, that, obviously, weren't affected by gravity and could take turn in any direction, and spacefoil, that were affected by gravity, and could only turn by rotating themselves and then going "up" or "down", like a plane.
You could unlock different vehicles in each category after having certain prerequisites in term off played games, I think it was represented as a license system.
The game was free, I think, and it's development may have been halted for a while (I remember receiving a mail about the game being revived). It was also mostly online, perhaps even exclusively online.
Answer
A lot of this sounds like Astronoid.net, a French multiplayer game from 2005 which seems to be completely dead now.
And here's a longer, more promotional video.
