What do these triangles in my inventory mean?

Having just looted my very first spoils of war, I notice that some of the items I've picked up have small, upward-pointing triangles next to their names.

So far, the triangles are appearing next to heavy armor only, but it seems unlikely the game has a "heavy armor icon" but no other kind of icon. So what do these triangles indicate?

Answer

One of the tooltips states that these triangles indicate that the game thinks that these are upgrades for you. It seems that it picks the "best" of each category: best shield, best boots, best helmet, best bow, best melee weapon, best arrows, etc.
