What do the different symbols on the map represent?

Question

As I slowly explore the enormous world of Skyrim, I see all sorts of different symbols appear on my compass. I know they indicate that I should go in that direction to find something, and that the symbol tells what type of thing it is. Some are relatively easy to decipher, but many are not. So I'd like to know what the different symbols mean so that I can know whether I should seek them out or save them for later.

Answer

What I've got definitely isn't comprehensive, and portions may be too specific:

  • Emblem = large city

  • big house = settlement (no instance)

  • small house = single shack or house

  • Mill = Farm

  • Sickle around flowers = Farm

  • Pine Tree = Grove

  • Pick + Hammer = Mine

  • Empire Logo (Diamond with Dragon inside): Imperial Army Camp

  • paw = Stormcloak Camp

  • Tusks = Giant camp

  • fort = Fort

  • tower = Tower

  • stone = Guardian stone

  • barrow = Barrow/Tomb

  • Dragon head = Dragon + Shout Word

  • Helmet thing = Surface encounter (think barrow with no instance)

  • Waterwheel = Mill

  • cave = Cave

  • horseshoe = Stable

  • Sailboat = Port

  • Gateway with bar on top = Daedric shrine

  • Gateway with round top = Dwarven ruins

  • Castle = Jarl's castle

  • tent = Camp

shield Shield? - I have only one on my map, it was an objective location as part of the "The Blessings of Nature" quest
