Starting with 1.8 prerelease, Minecraft players earn XP when they kill mobs!
What are the benefits of leveling up? More health? More damage? Larger inventory?

It will give skills at some point, but they don't know what it will do by 1.8. But I've heard that you'll be able to buy damage resist from falling, sprint longer, hold breath longer in water, higher jumping ...
