Question
I'm a pretty low level summoner on League of Legends, but I'm willing to spend a fair amount of IP to buy a good character. What is a good ranged character, not too squishy, that's pretty easy to handle? (I'm often holding a small baby when I play, so I can't use any hotkeys.)
Ashe seems to be a commonly used character for beginners. Is she really the best option? Or is the a lesser known character that might have more of an edge because other players aren't accustomed to defending against it?

I would shoot (no pun intended) for Tristana.
She's a ranged carry (same as ashe) with a long range (gets to be the longest, I believe) and two viable escapes (rocket jump + Ult) that makes her less "squishy", or, perhaps, less easily focused.
I think that you are still able to get Tristana unlocked for free by becoming a fan of LoL on facebook, so if that's the case, that might tip you in her direction.
Another option might be Teemo, though he doesn't have the escapes Tristana does.
The bottom line is that you won't know who you like best until you've tried several champions. Take advantage of the free champion rotation, don't be afraid to try new champions, and when you do find someone you like, you can buy them.
