How can I control time?

Notch seems to be able to change the time of day at a whim. Is this enabled by default (i.e., without mods), or is this a special Notch power?

Answer

Since Beta 1.8, you can fast-forward time in Creative mode by tapping F6 (single-player only).

The effect is not instantaneous — it speeds up the day/night cycle for a few seconds. Each tap seems to fast-forward ~2 hours, and multiple taps stack and make the sky spin faster. I don't recommend holding down F6 unless you have a sick bag ready.

This does not seem to affect timed events; saplings, crops and furnaces won't grow/work any faster.

For multiplayer servers, there's the operator-only /time command, which is instantaneous and works regardless of game mode.
