Question
The game had a demo on a PCGamer disc back in the late 90's, between 98-2000. I remember you were able to move your unit(s)? on an Isometric board, and actions were done through using cards in your hand. If I remember right it was heavily based around multiplayer, and I believe you could even buy more cards online. I enjoyed it, and doubt its still active but it bothers me that I cant think of the name to even look at what happened to it.
Edit More info about the game that i remember it was isometric and played on Terrain, I remember you had a human character.. or multiple possibly. It was based around fantasy.
Answer
Isometric, fantasy based, with online purchasing -- sounds like Sanctum (not the recent co-op tower defense game):

According to that wiki page (and my recollection) the servers for it were eventually taken over by a consortium of players themselves ("Nioga") after the company running it could no longer support them. In 2010 they went down for good and IIRC have not resurfaced.
I believe some of the developers went on to make Star Chamber and eventually become SOE Denver.
