need help finding a Super Nintendo side scrolling shooter

Question

I have been trying to find an old side scrolling shooter, for the super nintendo. I played it in '92 or '93.

On the game, the player controls a form of jet that can be fit with a large array of weapons. the weapons were chosen before the level, and would be listed as an icon row at the bottom of the screen. There were around 8 or 10 spaces for weapons. One of the weapons I remember was a canister that would shoot upwards off screen, and some form of rain attack would follow and damage all enemies.

As far as the levels I remember, one was at night above the clouds, and the boss was some giant aircraft that took up the right side of the screen. Another level took place near the ground, above a train or convoy. Also, the levels never seemed to go in the same order when played later on. I mean, I remember these 2 levels when I first played it, but when I played the next day it was totally different. Similarly, when getting a game over and starting from the beginning, the first level would be something different.

Answer

Could it be UN Squadron:

Before each flight mission, players have the opportunity to buy weapons, shields and fuel to bulk up their planes. During each mission, pilots earn additional money to be spent on subsequent missions. Each mission includes numerous small enemies -- in the air, on the ground or in the sea -- several mid-size enemies, and one large, strategic enemy target. Players can usually dispatch the smaller enemies with one shot, while larger enemies will only fall under a barrage of shots. U.N. Squadron features eight levels.

You can choose to play the levels in a different order, so that could effect what level came first as far as you remember.

The ultimate weapon is "Mega Crush"

a satellite that rains lasers down on the playfield and does massive damage to all enemies.

Can't remember name of GBA RPG/Shooter

Question

I'm trying to remember the name of a GBA game.

It was set in some futuristic, sci-fi "humans at war with some aliens" universe. The gameplay was essentially that you would walk around an area solving puzzles and such, but every so often you'd have an RPG-style random battle. Only instead of an RPG menu-based battle system, you would get beamed up to a ship and you would have to play an R-Type or Gradius-style side-scrolling shooter. When you had killed enough enemies in this mode, you would get beamed back down to the overworld map again.

Anybody know what this game was?

Answer

Was it Sigma Star? I remember playing this at some point a while ago: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sigma_Star_Saga

Eventually got tired of the huge number of random encounters and I stopped.

Old PC side-scrolling time-traveling game, historical, educational

Question

This is going to be extremely vague, as I only barely remember anything about the game other than that it was awesome. I think it was a sidescrolling platformer, and I remember there was a set list of historical figures (it's possible you had to rescue them), including Marie Curie and Socrates (or maybe Aristotle, something like that). I think the protagonist was somehow time-traveling to save these people. It's definitely not Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego, although it bears some resemblance. I think this game was older though, and relies more on side scrolling a la Mario rather than point and click adventure.

Just seeing if anyone else has heard of or played this!

edit: I may be wrong, but I think it was around the mid-90s, 94-96. Definitely 2D.

Answer

Sounds to me like a video game adaptation of Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure.

Help trying to identify an old PC game I used to play

Question

I used to play this game when I was a kid. I loved it and would love to try to find it again somewhere.

Here's what I know:

  • The game revolved around a kid roaming through a graveyard at night.
  • The game was a 2d sidescroller and somewhat of a platformer.
  • The game had zombies and other ghoulish monsters. The zombies were the main focus, and I think it had Zombies in the name. But not sure.
  • The game played a lot like Commander Keen, but with updated graphics.
  • I remember playing the game in the mid-late 90's. Around 1996-1998 maybe. I'm a little fuzzy on those details.

Answer

Based on the answer to my comment, I'm guessing Monster Bash

Here's a video of the gameplay:

Help to identify old mid-90 sidescrolling “RPG” (PC)

Question

I played this game around 1996-1997. It was a 2D side scroller. It was possible to travel between some kind of cave areas, where there were monsters, and the "city" areas, where you could buy stuff, talk to people, etc.

The city looked like different buildings standing in a row, as you travel past them. It was a "medieval" game, you had magic and sword-type weapons. You could call it an RPG because there was some kind of inventory, and you were able to travel freely between areas. It was fairly combat-oriented, mostly melee, without too much jumping (though you could travel up and down).

The graphics were somewhere between Jazz Jackrabbit and Mario for the NES. The only vivid detail I remember is that there was a frozen area with a boss, which looked like a giant fridge that wobbled like jelly. And the protagonist had a big nose.

Answer

Zeliard is most likely the answer. Did your character look like a viking type persona?

What is the name of this Mega Drive (aka Genesis) side-scrolling shooter?

Question

I really hope one of you knows the answer to this!

Basically, I am looking for a name of a specific Mega Drive (aka Genesis) side-scrolling shooter. I can't guarantee accuracy in the following details, as it was a long time ago, but I would love to hear suggestions.

The "facts":

  • Possibly mid 90s side scrolling shooter.
  • Possibly had multiple facets - you would be in a ship (?) for some levels, shooting waves of flying enemies, and walking around for others.
  • Had a boss either at the end of each level, or occasionally.
  • Definitely had a snake boss in one level, where you would have to kill it by shooting different parts of its body as it circled around you.
  • Most likely had a fish boss where you had to shoot the scales of the fish to defeat it.
  • Definitely could have two players playing at the same time, in co-op mode.
  • Possibly quite colourful.
  • Possibly had Japanese origins.

Edit: Thanks for all the help so far guys!

Bio Hazard battle is a great game, and I actually did play it when I was younger. However, it is not the game I am trying to find! Thanks anyway Maneero! Also, Viewpoint is not the game either.

I appreciate your help SystemDown, and I agree that Darius is legendary amongst the genre, however it is also not the game I am looking for!

I'm starting to appreciate that this is quite a tough one to crack. I have spent about 8 hours this weekend looking for the game, to the point that I may soon actually believe it never existed!

I shall repeat an improved version of what I have said earlier, about my most vivid details:

The most vivid details I do have concern the snake: When the boss appears, it does so by slowly entering the screen in a circular fashion from the bottom and close to the right. The snake consists of several contiguous segments and it circles the player(s) while the player(s) shoot the segments of the snake. The segments would change colour, eventually to red, as they became more damaged. The snake is defeated by damaging all of the segments. If we were clever enough, we could disable the entire snake before it completed one complete move (ie: shoot all segments as they appear on the screen).

PS: By multiple facets, I mean "hybrid platformer and shmup".

Hope to hear more suggestions!

Edit: Still looking for the answer! Here are some more details:

  • Forgot to say it before, but it is a horizontally scrolling shooter.
  • It was available in Europe. Specifically, the UK. It's feasible that the game was never released in Japan and/or America.
  • Not Bio Hazard Battle, Viewpoint, Darius, Thunderforce IV, Alien Soldier, Gunstar Heroes, Rocket Night.
  • Not Blaster Master 2. It is a very close match, but it was only published in North America.
  • Not Super Fantasy Zone, although elements like boss-changing-colour make it feel like it is remotely possible the game's developer could have written the game I am looking for.
  • Perhaps it wasn't a Mega Drive game after all? I only owned that one console in the past, but am I correct in supposing the only alternative at the time would be a SNES? It isn't totally unlikely that a friend of mine didn't bring over a console to my house at the time.
  • Perhaps it is a game that has not been successfully emulated? Is there a list of these games?

I'll see if I can get in contact with some old friends to find out the answer. I think it unlikely, but if I pull it off I'll post the answer here!

Nick

Answer

Could be Sagaia/Darius II indeed, but there is no multiplayer in that one.

Lucky for you, not many shooters on Genesis have co-op mode and fish!

Check out Bio-Hazard Battle:

Old PC side scroller about a fat guy in red cap wearing blue shirt

Question

It's a game I once played with my neighbour, I think around mid to late 90s. It's a 2D sidescroller, and each level consists of stairs and platforms, where the protagonist goes around collecting ammo and avoiding monsters.

The protagonist is a fat guy in red cap and blue shirt, and whenever he stops moving he puts his finger inside his belly button. The game has a cartoonish style.

The game is (I think) about the guy who needs to go to some kind of event in one US state, but rides his car around and visits various places (hence the levels) before finally arriving. In between states there is a "travelling mode" where the guy is shown riding his car on the road, avoiding hazards and collecting ammo.

Answer

Sounds kind of like Arcade America to me! There were driving levels in addition to platforming as well....

cover artgameplay

Joey and his pet monsters are going to a concert in Woodstock. Unfortunately, Joey has overslept, and his monsters have gone a little overboard in waking him up; their plan involved colossal amounts of dynamite. As a result, all the monsters have ended up all over the USA, and now Joey has to find them all.

Arcade America is a humorous platform game where you control the rather overweight Joey. Each level consists of a couple of smaller micro-levels and is set in an iconic location within the States, such as Alcatraz or Las Vegas, and has its own specific enemies. The goal on each level is to rescue one of the monsters.

While moving between levels, you take part in a crazy minigame where you control Joey's car as he drives towards the next area. While driving, Joey must avoid obstacles on his way, but he can also collect ammunition and shoot at the obstacles.

Mid-90s side scrolling sci-fi strategy game

Question

There's an old(ish - mid-to-late-90s; I think I played it around 1998, give or take a year or so) sort of strategy game that I played a while back on the PC. It's not exactly a strategy like StarCraft is, it's... well, it's pretty difficult to put into words. My memory is also pretty sketchy when it comes to the details. I know that it was a side scroller and you controlled some sort of squid-type creatures. Everything looked very "organic" in this game, from the way the buildings looked, to the way the creatures themselves looked. The creatures you controlled looked a bit like brains with tentacles or jellyfish. I know it's a pretty vague description, but how many side-scrolling strategies could there be? The goal of the game was to eliminate the other guys, but that's pretty much the only thing I remember for sure; once you defeated the enemies in one "realm", you would then teleport your creatures to another "realm" and start over. I think you (by 'you' I mean 'your creatures') gathered a resource and then your squid thingies would place it on the ground and other buildings would appear in the place where they would put the stuff down.

Thank you,

Ragnar

Answer

A DOS sidescroller where you played as some kind of captain?

Question

It has been bugging me for ages..it was the one game I lived on as a kid.

  • You were some kind of (yellow?) superhero/captain person and you had a ray gun.

  • It was 8-bit style graphics, maybe VGA. It was about 1998 when I played it. (Very, very simple)

  • It came on a floppy disk and I ran it via DOS.

  • Some of the enemies were wasps in this set of dark stairs you could go down.

  • I vaguely remember some random beach balls (the generic colourful ones) appeared

  • Most of the world was above ground and was at night. There was some kind of wooded area as well..but the rest was underground in a top secret base type place.

  • There was no vocals or speech or anything.

The reason I mention the captain part is I swear the game is called Captain Banana or something.

EDIT: The HUD/GUI was non-existent, or there wasn't much of it.

Answer

That sounds a lot like Captain Comic, though it had a fairly large HUD/GUI. The date is also about 10 years off (it's from 1988, not 1998. Though I doubt many DOS, floppy disk based games were coming out in 1998)
