Buying games online, but in which platform? [closed]

Question

The benefits of buying an online game is huge, with a small counterpart that you would need an internet connection to download the entire game and you can't play without having the platform installed already.

Steam must be the most used platform to buy and play games (it's said they own more than 70% of the market in digital gaming distribution), but I found their prices really high comparing with not-so-known platforms.

prices can change from 349 to 299 and I just wanna ask... is it worthy the extra bucks?

What platforms can you recommend?

Answer

There are many reliable digital distribution web sites, among which I would recommend Direct2Drive, Impulse, GamersGate, GoodOldGames, GetGames and, of course, Steam.

Just note that not all digitally owned games require you to install a proprietary platform and/or check for internet connection to prevent piracy (DRM). Sites such as GoodOldGames or GetGames are generally DRM-free, meaning that once you purchase a game form them, you are free to redownload, install and play it freely, even offline and without installation of any digital distribution platform.

It is a good idea to look for promos and discounts. These are time and title-limited, but happen frequently and usually reduce the prices significantly.
