Can I return a game if the vendor forces me to buy DLCs to play competitavely? [closed]

Question

This is more of a legal question regarding DLCs in games.

Here is why I ask:

Now with Street Fighter x Tekken coming out and providing a new Gem system with many DLCs to come I fear I cannot compete with other players buying expensive more powerful gems (DLC).

I mean I buy a game for 30-50 bucks so I can play online competitively. Until now most DLCs in fighting games are optional, as they don't make you stronger. You get different costumes or new characters. But as all characters are supposed be "balanced". I do not suffer from not buying the DLCs.

Now I heard that Capcom wants to create more powerful gems and sell them. There are AFAIK currently no game modes that allow to play without gems, so I will be forced to play with inferior gems.

Furthermore, especially for PC, many shops do not allow you to return a game once you have played it. I want to buy SFxT in about 2 months for PC once it is released.

I don't think this is fair. The vendor must provide a game mode that allows me to play on a same level with other players and make buying DLCs optional. I as a customer want to buy the game and play as long as I want with the status quo (Situation on release date). I cannot see into the future how the balancing will change with new expensive DLCs I do not want to buy.

Basically my question is: Do I have a legal chance to return the game if for example after 1 month of playing a certain expensive and very powerful DLC is realeased and I cannot compete with other gamers unless I buy it?

Sure you can argue its just another 5 bucks, but what if next month another similar DLC is released, and the following month too etc.?

Asked by ayckoster

Answer

I'm not a lawyer, this is not legal advice.

I'm going to compare your argument on DLCs to that of expansions for typical games (DLC's are after all, mini expansions). When a game creates an expansion, anyone who doesn't buy the expansion usually gets left behind. For example, when Starcraft: Brood Wars came out, anyone who didn't switch was left behind playing with a significantly reduced (if non-existent) player base. The same thing happens with World of Warcraft. If you don't buy the expansion "Wrath of the Lich King" or "Cataclysm", you will be playing with and against players who have significantly better gear such as "Heirlooms".

I can tell you for sure that you can not return any Blizzard game if you agree to the EULA and TOC. Once you open the box it can not be returned.

Does the order have to be in a certain condition for me to return it?

Games must be returned new and unopened in their original sealed box.

source

If you've already enjoyed the game to some extent, you're not going to have much luck returning it. I've felt the same way personally, when I played Halo: ODST I felt the 5 hours of gameplay I got out of it was a "ripoff" for $70, but I still played the game that the developers set out for me.

Your only option is to sell the game. Unfortunately, PC games are hard to sell because of the complicated licensing arrangements you unwittingly make with them, and console games are going that route as well (locking you out of multiplayer if you buy it second hand).

My best advice is to:

  • Research games and companies before purchasing
  • Don't support companies in the future that make decisions you don't agree with
  • Contact companies with your concerns - you may be suprised
  • Accept that you pay for what you get in the box and nothing more

How do I fix my bathroom mirror

Question

I'm going crazy! This mirror has been broken for ages, I've e-mailed the landlord about it multiple times, but they keep telling me off.

However, when I took a quick sneak peak at their reception computer, they have an e-mail sitting in their inbox from the mirror supplier asking them to come pick it up since it's been waiting for over a month.

How do I get them to fix my mirror?

Asked by Konerak

Answer

You're not supposed to actually fix it.

The point of the broken mirror is it adds a bit of depth to your character - he keeps breaking it because he can't stand to look at himself.

Text expansion in Diablo III fullscreen on OS X

Question

My usual text expander, Typinator, doesn't work when Diablo III is in fullscreen. How can I expand text in D3—is there anything built-in, or should another OS X text expansion utility work?

Answer

I've tried the trial version of TextExpander and it seems to work in StarCraft II in fullscreen. I don't have Diablo III beta access so I can't truly say if it'll work… but since they're both Blizzard games, the chances are high.

How many ghosts are there, and what do they say?

Question

In the graveyard levels I encountered multiple ghosts.

You can see them when the lightning flashes. Pressing "B" will cause them to say something.

How many are there, and what is the transcript of what they say? Is there any known relationship between what they say and a puzzle or easter egg?

Asked by EBongo

Answer

There are four ghosts and they're unconnected to the puzzles and Easter eggs.

  • In the skull room: "Afterlife / Outerspace / Afterspace / Outerlife."
  • In the "dots to dots" room that leads to the mausoleum: "Don't believe the hypercube."
  • In the room atop the prior one: "Because you can't see something, doesn't mean it's not there."
  • In the golden cube return warp (farthest away): "Owls creep me out... / But I forget why..."

"Afterlife" "Don't believe the hypercube." "Because you can't see something, doesn't mean it's not there." "Owls creep me out... / But I forget why..."

What does mastering a weapon do?

Question

After a match, I got a notification pop-up that went something like this.

Your submachine gun mastery has reached level 3.

Okay. That's great. And not really surprising, considering my only usable weapon is an SMG.

What does it mean, though? Does mastering a weapon type have any benefits?

Asked by lunboks

Answer

Okay, I just found that information in Brick-Force's train wreck of a shop interface.

Apparently, mastering a weapon type gives you a discount on all weapons of the same type in the shop. This is kind of a big deal, since you have to keep buying your weapons if you want something other than the default junk.

Presumably you master weapons by killing lots of dudes with them. You can master everything that's classified as a weapon, including grenades and melee items.

These are all the mastery tiers and their associated discounts; they apply across the board, regardless which in-game currency type you use.

Level 1: 0% off
Level 2: 3% off
Level 3: 5% off
Level 4: 8% off
Level 5: 15% off

How can I tell which part of the game can only be unlocked in New Game+ and which one cannot?

Question

How can I tell which part of the game can only be unlocked in New Game+ and which one cannot?

I am getting frustrated with this game, not with the complexity of it, but the lack of information on what I am supposed to expect to be able to do in the first playthrough. How should I know that I can't lower the water level till New Game+? What exactly is the goal of the first playthrough? What's the fundamental difference between New Game+ and the first playthrough?

Asked by James Jiao

Answer

The idea is to play through to the 32-cube ending, which should present itself as a natural progression. Once you finish the game, you have no choice but to start a new game (the New Game+) if you're so inclined to complete every puzzle (or "209.4%" the game). The NG+ is the same as the first playthrough (everything carrries over) except for one bonus feature, which only actually helps with one puzzle-type:

The white and purple pillars (not the U-shaped tuning fork pillars) are the only puzzles that depend on the first-person vision New Game+ bonus.

The rest can be solved without it in the first playthrough. There is no in-game method for telling which puzzles have all of its pieces. It requires unusual attention to hidden/obscure codes and nuances. One could contend that the game's main conceit is withholding information from the player (see the monolith debacle). Later (optional) Easter eggs include finding the 64-cube door and collecting the heart cube pieces. You will most likely check the Internet for answers before exhausting every in-game clue, and, presumably, Fez was designed to be played with that in mind.

Is there any way to make the text scroll faster?

Question

In Solatorobo:Red the Hunter, I find the text scrolls slower than I would like.

I know that the manual says that I can press R + A to automatically advance the text, but that skips over things, and I don't want to miss what people are saying. I just want them to say it faster.

Is this an option? If so, how do I do it?

Asked by Derpy Hooves

Answer

Yes you can and it's so obvious that it's possible you might be doing it already - hold A. Just to be certain, I started up my copy and tested several combinations of input to come up with this answer. According to the game manual's control section (page 12 in my copy), it says:

A Button

Confirm selections/advance on-screen messages.

This doesn't overtly answer your question as text dialogs ask you to press A to advance to the next screen of text, in fitting with what the manual describes. However, it should be noted that holding A while text fills the dialog makes the text fill the dialog somewhat faster and this can also be considered advancing on-screen messages. The increase in text speed offered by holding A is not dramatically significant so you may not notice it at first, but to verify that there is a difference, all you need to do is let a dialog fill with text without holding A and it should be clear. Even holding A part way through a dialog filling with text is a sufficient demonstration of the difference.

On the same page of the manual, it also says:

  • During a conversation, hold down the R button and A button simultaneously to have the conversation automatically advance.

As noted in the manual R + A skips over text dialogs, often before the text is even near finished being printed to the screen as you have noted.

To have speed and control of a text dialog, all you need to do is hold A all the time in text dialogs, and when you've finished reading the current screen of text, tap (but do not hold) R to advance the dialog to the next screen.

Do elevators ever reset in Assassin's Creed Brotherhood?

Question

Do the "elevators" in Assassin's Creed Brotherhood ever reset? From the way they are built they look pretty much like single-use objects but that would be kind of annoying since you usually spend lots of time in a town and are likely to go to the same place twice.

Yes, they do reset - they're only disabled for a short while after you use them. Leaving the general area and returning tends to get them to reset.

In what order should I take levels in Holy Fire and its synergies to maximize damage?

Question

Obviously, after maxing Holy Fire and its synergies, the damage will be the same regardless of which skills I took in which order.

If I want to max the damage for my Holy Fire Paladin during play, however, what order should I take points in Holy Fire, Resist Fire, and Salvation (if at all before the end)? Essentially, I want to maximize my damage at each individual level in order to stand the best chance against the minions of hell.

If the order for damage is different from the passive weapon damage it gives vs. the AoE aura damage, the damage on the weapon should be prioritized higher than the damage for the aura.

Asked by StrixVaria

Answer

Holy Fire damage is pretty underwhelming in general. The gain for each level of the skill is not % based, it is a fixed number. The synergies from Resist Fire and Salvation are 18% and 6% respectively.

Going level by level and determining which is better, an extra 18% or the base increase, here is what I came up with

enter image description here

So if the last column increases, you take Resist Fire, otherwise you take Holy Fire. Salvation is obviously last.

Then again, you're much better off moving on to Holy Shock before this point. Level 6 Holy Shock has the same average damage as Level 20 Holy Fire.

Mod that makes dropped items stand out?

Question

One thing that annoys me with Oblivion (even though it is realistic) is that when you kill a mob, and they drop their weapon(s), you have a hard time finding them in, say, tall grass. Especially when you're on a hillside (and Cyrodil seems to be very hilly :D), stuff rolls/slides down, landing sometimes quite far from the actual fight.

So: I'd love it if there was a mod that made them stand out. Maybe (to keep it "realistic") having to quest for a special spell. Or does such a spell exist? Either way, something that made them show up, like "Detect Life".

Answer

There are a few spell-based mods that do this.

Detect Life adds a spell that puts a particle effect on items, making them obvious on the ground or behind rocks. It's a "beta" quality release and it's been years since, so it's unlikely to get polished up, but it works. Requires OBSE v0017 or later.

Finders Keepers adds a whole lot of spells for detecting different objects by adding shaders/particle effects. It also has spells that can detect different NPC aspects, such as Vampirism, disposition, etc. Some can be used simultaneously, and some will cancel others—so you can, for example, have Detect Weapons and Detect Keys running simultaneously, but casting Detect Alignment will cancel any other Detect spell. Clearly it's not as convenient as a one-size-fits-all Detect Items spell, but this might feel more "realistic" for some players. As a bonus, though, many of the item-detection spells will reveal things inside chests as well as on the ground. Requires OBSE v0013a or later and the latest official patch.

Some of the big magic overhaul mods may also include item-detection spells, but I haven't found a comprehensive guide to their included spells quite yet.

What are the differences between the multiple types of infantry?

Question

In the Napoleonic Wars DLC for Mouant and Blade, each faction as access to different types of infantry: Line infantry, Light Infantry, Foot Guards and Fusillier.

Beside the size of their hat, what is the difference between these kind of infantry?

Asked by Jupotter

Answer

I found this in the official manual on the official forums:

Line Infantry

Line infantry was the most common Infantry type in the Napolenic wars. Line infantry are usally equipped with a bayoneted musket and sometimes with a small sword referred to as a “butter knife” or “sabre briquet”. Line infantry have medium shooting and melee skills and are a good all rounder troop type.

Light Infantry

Light infantry are light and fast moving units that possess good shooting skills. Light Infantry is equipped with an unbayoneted musket and a small sword for melee combat. Due to their good speed and accuracy; they are especially useful for flanking enemy lines and supporting fire. However, light infantry is at a disadvantage in melee and should thus avoid getting to close to enemy lines.

Riflemen and Jaegers

Riflemen are light and fast moving units with good shooting skills. Riflemen are equipped with a highly accurate but slow to reload rifle and a small sword for melee combat.
Due to their high shooting and running skills, riflemen are especially useful for sniping enemy officers. However, Riflemen are at a strong disadvantage in melee combat and should avoid getting close to enemy lines.

How is Deadly Strike calculated?

Question

When I was playing on my Zealadin, a friend of mine gave me a sword that had the Deadly Strike bonus applied to it.

I'm not entirely sure this sword was legit (it could have very well been a modded weapon, but I don't even know how to tell). The thing that interested me was that, by the time I hit level 99, the Deadly Strike bonus was up to +600% Chance of Deadly Strike.

What does this bonus signify? Or, more importantly, how is its bonus damage calculated?

Asked by Fluttershy

Answer

Information on Deadly Strike is scare, but basically, it's the same as Critical Strike which allows for a multiplier on damage dealt. This is what I found from Diablo Wiki and ExtremeGamerz

Some things to note about Deadly Strike:

  • All melee damage is doubled, whether its physical, magic or elemental
  • Deadly strike is the last thing that's applied to your damage, so the existing modifiers are taken into account
  • Deadly Strike & Critical Strike are mutually exclusive, so both cannot stack up & be applied at the same time:
  • Chance to do double damage is given by: Real chance to do double damage = Critical Strike + (Deadly Strike / 100) * (100 - Critical Strike)
  • There is no cap on how high the chance to trigger a deadly strike can get, but anything over 100% is pointless because it can be active only once per attack.

Should I play Diablo 1 and / or Diablo 2 before playing Diablo 3?

Question

I plan on picking up Diablo 3 on the expected release day, but I am new to the franchise. I know in other games it is crucial to play the previous release to fully understand the story line. Does Diablo 2 have a cliff hanger I need to know about?

Should I play Diablo 1 and / or Diablo 2 before playing Diablo 3?

Asked by Foxtrot

Answer

No.

While the series' lore continues, the series was never known for its story. If you want to experience the series, you will most likely need to play alone or with friends as D2 online players rush through the game. While you can let experienced players run ahead, they will open and close quests for you before you can arrive, and spend little time looking at new items and listening to dialogue and cutscenes (which, undoubtedly, is why you're playing). Also the spam bots are awful. The only benefit to you now, pre-Diablo III, is whatever you happen to take away from that rushed experience. (Even the Easter eggs are obscure and most likely won't be things you remember from a normal playthrough.) And even after all this, D2 is a very long journey to undertake alone.

The game mechanics are also different between each game—many of the dog-eat-dog elements of D2 (stealing loot, final boss rushes, power leveling) are downplayed or simply removed in D3. Unless you would play the games anyway, you will benefit more from the time invested by watching a few D1/D2 gameplay videos for nostalgia and this lore video series instead:

Belathor disappeared

Question

So for some reason Belathor seems to have disappeared. Whenever I go to his shop, it is locked up tight. However, when I see his assistant, he always invites me to come by the shop, so I don't think I killed him. I know there was a dragon attack in the city, but I only saw guards dead. Either way, I thought that store owners were among the NPCs that could not get killed. Is there some reason I am missing as to where he could have gone? This is also before the Civil War storyline (I haven't joined a faction yet). Also, I am on ps3, so no console commands.

Asked by IrishJMA

Answer

Belethor is not essential (read: he can be killed), so it's possible that he's dead. I can't confirm this at the moment, but I believe that Sigurd (his assistant) will say the same things regardless of Belethor's state - he's only got about 3 lines total.

The UESP page for Belethor notes a bug that you may be experiencing, though:

Belethor's shop will often close the moment you leave no matter what the hour, and may not reopen until after his inventory resets. [...] The standard wait for reset often results in his shop still being closed regardless of the time of day. Waiting nearby in one hour increments may fix this.

Is it possible to re-spec a character that has already completed all quests? [closed]

Question

Possible Duplicate:
Can you reassign or change your character's attributes and abilities(respec) more than once in Diablo 2?

One of the patches to Diablo 2 added a quest reward that allowed you to re-spec your characters skills. If a character had already completed all the quests prior to the patch, is there any way to get a respec for that character?

Edit: I'm aware of the technique mentioned in Can you reassign or change your character's attributes and abilities(respec) more than once in Diablo 2?, but I'm not yet able to beat all the bosses in Hell. Is there no free respecs for characters that existed before the patch?

Asked by bwarner

Answer

The 1.13 patchnotes says that all players who have completet the quests should receive 1 free respec in hell difficulty.

Respecialization is now possible! Completing the 'Den of Evil' quest will now additionally reward 1 free respec which can be saved. Players who have already completed this quest should receive 1 free respec in Hell difficulty.

********************Keeping answer for original question**********************

Yes, as of patch 1.13 you can respec by collecting one of each essence and using them in the Horadiric Cube

1 of each of the Essences --> Reset of stats

In v1.13 a new choice was added. A character can now respec their attributes. This is done by speaking to Akara after completing the Den of Evil quest in Act 1.

In that same version, after using all of the stat resets, if you're still unhappy with your build, you can go out and defeat each of the end bosses of each act in Hell difficulty to receive an Essence.

They are just a bit more rare than keys are to complete the pandemonium event.

Only works in v1.13 or later

Can followers (templar, enchantress, scoundrel) die?

Question

They are supposed to leave battle when they are low on health, but what qualifies as low health, or can they TP out? Will they die if they're trapped in a mob and can't escape? If so, what happens? Are there any other circumstances in which they will die? How long are they gone? Will they be in town if they've gone away, and can you go back to town to pick them up, or must you wait either way?

No, they don't die. If they go to 0 health, they disappear from the battle and reappear sometime later (even if the same fight is still going on).

It was easiest to test this with the skeleton king. My templar "died" a couple of times and came back 30 seconds or something like that later (Although that number is just an estimate, I haven't measured).

What DLC items are included in the Gears of War 3 Season Pass?

Question

A friend and I were looking to get back to Gears of War 3 again and see what was new in terms of DLC. I went a-lookin' and... well, there's definitely plenty to sort through.

As I was looking through the list, I came across a "Season Pass" DLC. It's quite expensive compared to the rest, however it claims to offer 33% off from buying its contents normally.

Can't say I'd argue with 33% off. Unfortunately, the listing for this DLC doesn't list what comes with it:

The Season Pass serves as your pre-order (at a 33% discount!) of four downloadable content packages that you will receive every quarter, starting in November.

I realize that it can't exactly name what isn't out yet, but what of the ones that have been released? Following the every quarter logic, two of them have become available and one should be on the way. There are definitely more than two listings available for Gears of War 3...

Which of the DLC packs available for Gears of War 3 are provided when the Season Pass is purchased?

The first Gears of War 3 Season Pass grants access to:

and the Season Pass exclusive Liquid Metal Skins.

I have it and can confirm.

I said first because there's been talk of more season passes to come although I'm not sure whether it's been confirmed or not.

How are money and experience divided in Dead Island's co-op mode?

Question

Are money and experience divided evenly when you play co-op? I'm playing with two friends of mine, and we'd like to try to stay within roughly the same level of each other.

So far, it looks like you get more experience when you tag a zombie, which is frankly, really annoying, especially seeing as we all have different weapon focuses and it can be hard to get a hit in on lower level zombies when they die so quickly from 3 people curb stomping them at once.

How exactly does this work?

Asked by FAE

Answer

It works quite poorly. Money distribution is reasonable, but there are a great many ways that XP disparity can exist and the game's mechanics seem to only exist to further this disparity. There are some mods that have been developed to try and force equalized XP distribution, but even then they do not cover all cases and XP disparity can still crop up.

Money

As of the latest patch, "loot from dead enemies is now always identical for all co-op players". Further research and testing reveals that all money received is identical for all co-op players in the sense that when someone picks up money from an enemy or loot container, all co-op players get that same amount of money with the exception of those with money boosting abilities who would have the amount that they receive modified by those abilities.

XP skills

Skills that increase XP, even if they claim to affect everyone in co-op have been reported to only do so for those in very close proximity. It would appear that these skills would only affect players with those skills active when co-op players are not bunched up. Obviously individually affecting skills will only affect the individual. This is a great way to further XP disparity.

Quests

Quest rewards are a bit more problematic. Each player in a co-op game may need to turn in a quest to get the rewards. Quest XP is far more challenging to explain. If the co-op players are not at the same points in the campaign, only players at or beyond the host's campaign progress will get quest XP. As of the latest patch, "in subsequent playthroughs XP is awarded for all quests completed in co-op" so for those players who have completed the game, they should receive XP, even when they aren't up to that point in single-player campaign again. It has been noted that sometimes, quest XP rewards have not been received in co-op when both players are at the same point in the campaign and the workaround was to have the co-op partners turn in the quests rather than the host. Quest XP is also scaled to your level so XP disparity will be further widened.

Challenge XP

Challenge progress is preserved across characters and playthroughs and XP only goes to the character that completes the challenge. All of a sudden, someone might complete a challenge they've been progressing towards with a different character and create a vast XP gap.

Action XP

You get individual XP for small actions such as healing, buffs, breaking doors and the like which can also increase XP disparity.

Combat XP

XP Bonuses abound. You get extra XP from breaking bones, landing criticals, etc. You get a share of the XP if you deal some of the damage, with the person dealing the final blow getting the most XP. Players who don't participate in combat get very little of the XP. Due to different combat mechanics and tactics, it is very easy for an XP disparity to form.

As of the current version, "enemy's levels can now be adjusted independently for each co-op player," and this means that by default, each co-op player will individually see the same enemies at or around their own level and XP will be distributed in accordance with their level, furthering XP disparity. It's possible to turn this option off, but it may only be with a mod.

Dead Island Co-op is Defective

All of a sudden people will sometimes jump in level for no apparent reason. Dead Island co-op is notoriously buggy and there are many modders working to try and address these concerns so you might try a mod or two to try and balance out the issues you've experienced, but there are no guaranteed fixes for this broken system.

How to play a multiplayer team death match in MW3 indefinitely? (no scoring)

Question

I do not know if this is possible but I think the online team death match is too fast? The game ends every 10-20 mins when the score is reached. Is there a way or a mode that let's you play indefinitely without scoring or at least to join a game with extremely high score goals? Currently I have no choice and I am automatically joined in a random game. This is PS3 btw.

Asked by IMB

Answer

In private matches, you can customize the rules of the game and change things such as the time limit and score limit. However, you must then invite friends to play with you. Private matches are just that - private, and only open to the people you invite.

If you're looking to play a game against random people on the internet, you are limited to the playlists that are available within the game. None of the available multiplayer game modes are time-based in Modern Warfare 3.

That said, Team Deathmatch games tend to play pretty quickly, but if you just want to be playing and getting kills, you might try an "objective" game type.

For instance:

  • Search and Destroy tends to take longer and does not have a kill limit. The objective is to get a bomb to a bomb site, which many people ignore in favor of just killing each other.
  • Kill Confirmed requires that you pick up tags in order to get credit for a kill, so there are typically more kills per round than in other "kill enemies to win" modes.
  • Drop Zone also focuses more on holding a position and playing with killstreak rewards than on a specific number of kills.
  • Ground War mixes several game types and has a higher score limit, so more kills are required to win, although there are typically more players.

Minecraft Inventory Items moving strangely

Question

Recently I've been using the SE Gaming Minecraft server a lot, and today when I tried to craft watermelons into seeds, I discovered that they wouldn't move to the crafting table when I clicked them, they moved to my quick-use bar, then moved back to my inventory when I clicked them again. I checked my Shift key, and it was not compressed, so that's not the problem. What is the problem?

Asked by Portali5t

Answer

I know you checked your shift key, but 1 explanation would be that you pressed shift multiple times resulting in an affect called sticky keys. One way to remove it is press shift repeatedly until your computer has a pop up message. Then you have to press cancel or something.

Sorry if this isn't specific enough. And please don't edit as to steal my credit.

Question

I'm just wondering if the players in this game exhibit "tells" that I should be paying attention to in order to have a strategic advantage when I play, or if it is relatively random.

Any feedback on this?

Asked by Zoot

Answer

Yes, I've seen Tycho and Max exhibit a tell. Only once for each of them, when they had something like pocket aces and flopped another ace. There is specific reference in the update news about the characters showing a tell. Tells, as far as I can tell, are a random occurrence when the character has a good hand.

I tried to open my SWTOR Launcher this morning after turning my computer back on (played last night just fine) and the launcher won't open. The process is running (launcher.exe on the task manager) but the window never shows up. The log file in

Program Files (x86)\Electronic Arts\BioWare\Star Wars - The Old Republic\logs

says this

[datetime] Failed to load bundles
[datetime] Going offline

What gives?

Asked by Adanion

Answer

Alright, I read what seemed like dozens and dozens of forum posts on how to fix this problem and nothing was working (this seems to be a rather large problem and has been since beta). I tried using the FixLauncher.exe, didn't work. I tried running the SWTOR_setup.exe and reset to defaults, didn't work. I was about ready to give up and just uninstall and reinstall the entire game but I got lucky.

This is what finally got the launcher to show back up.

  1. I navigated to

Program Files (x86)\Electronic Arts\BioWare\Star Wars - The Old Republic

    and deleted the Patch folder
  2. Restarted the computer
  3. Ran the FixLauncher.exe
  4. Restarted the computer
  5. Ran launcher.exe

And the Launcher FINALLY showed up.

This probably isn't the only fix to this but this is what worked for me.

If you want to look through the "This isn't our fault (even though the launcher is so bad we actually have a FixLauncher.exe), so how about we start at the beginning and kill some time... while we try and fix the launcher" - Troubleshooting Guide - There you go.

About the passive ability from Lux

Question

Okay, so Lux' passive marks an enemie everytime you hit him with a spell, so you have like 6 seconds to hit him with your AA to "ignite" it, which means you will deal some more magical damage.

Now I played quite some games with Lux and also read some Guides, but I still didn't figure these 2 things out ( because when I engage I just bring down my combo without looking for details ^^ )

  1. Does her passive get "ignited" only by AA or also by her other spells?
  2. Does her Ulti also mark the enemy ?
Asked by Toby

Answer

  1. Lux's passive, Illumination, is ignited both by her auto-attacks and her ultimate, Finales Funkeln.
  2. Yes, Finales Funkeln both ignites any present Illumination debuff on the enemy and applies a new Illumination debuff after resolution.

What are the origins of the character names in Bioshock?

Question

After reading the "bookshelf" xkcd comic, I am considering the influences of "Atlas shrugged" by Ayn Rand on the character names of Bioshock: there is an Atlas, and Andrew Ryan is almost an anagram of Ayn Rand. Are there additional inspirations for the character names? Have these inspirations been documented by the game developer?

Asked by wok

Answer

Yes, it's well-documented on the BioShock wiki (from Rosie to Rapture to Sander Cohen—too many to list here). The Ayn Rand connection is also noted by the devs.1 2 Though it should be said that BioShock makes a poor showing of objectivism, the worldview associated with Atlas Shrugged.

Is there a bonus for 100% completion?

Question

Simple question, really—do you get any bonus for 100% completion in LA Noire? (GTA IV unlocked certain features with 100% as I remember, although nothing cheat codes couldn't do.) Is there anything different in LA Noire after unlocking 100% completion?

Answer

If you are playing the game on Xbox 360 or Playstation 3, you unlock the achievement/trophy called "The City of Angels".

Other than this, no, you do not unlock any bonuses for completing the game, unlike in GTAIV.

Do wolves prevent hostile mobs from spawning?

Question

In Minecraft, because of the limit to how many mobs can spawn and be in the same area, if you are carrying around, say 20 wolves with you, would that prevent other mobs from spawning? You could travel at night without worry of dying from hostile mobs, though the wolves may push you off a cliff.

Answer

No they do not.

Wolves spawn and are tamed as passive mobs (I'm unsure whether this means that they will prevent new passive mobs from spawning).

Hostile and passive mobs have a diffrent mob cap. They do not share this cap.

The only time that a wolf will help prevent hostile mobs from spawning, is if you attack it while it's not tamed, so that it becomes hostile, at which point it will join the hostile mob cap list and will behave like hostile mobs (despawning etc.)

How do I fix missing text strings after applying the “tag not found” bug fix?

Question

Yesterday, I bought Titan Quest Gold via Steam and installed it with the German language files. After starting the Immortal Throne add-on, it imported my old characters from an old profile. After that, I faced the generally known "tag not found"-bug and fixed it with an update of the Text_DE.arc (211KB).

But there are still many missing tags which seem only to refer to the new features which were included with the add-on. The enchantment window, for example, is completely unusable. I've also tried to repatch the game to English but the add-on content texts were still missing.

I have searched for a solution, but I only found fixes for the general "tag not found" bug. How can I fix this bug?

Asked by Demnogonis

Answer

I solved the problem. I made the mistake to overwrite the Text_DE.arc in the IT folder with the one, which was downloaded by the patch program. This file does NOT go to the resources folder of Immortal Throne. It must be placed in the resources folder of the normal Titan Quest installation, because TQ cascades it's resources. After I placed it in the normal TQ resources folder it worked.

Thanks anyway :)

How much damage does each tool do?

Question

I read on the wiki that a diamond shovel does as much damage as a wooden sword.

This lead me to wonder how much damage each tool does.

What I'd like to know is the specific values that each tool at each tier does (wooden, stone etc.) including swords.

Half a heart is equal to one damage, so a whole heart is two damage.

The reason I want to know is in case I get caught in a fight without a sword, I'll know which of my tools is going to offer me the best chance of surviving.

Asked by Mr Smooth

Answer

The damage charts can be located here but I cropped them for you.

Mobs' health is measured in 'hearts', just like the player's. Chickens have 2 hearts; sheep have 4; cows, squids and pigs have 5; spiders have 8; skeletons, creepers, blazes, tamed wolves and zombie pigmen have 10; zombies have 11. Ghasts have only 5 hearts. Wild wolves have 4 hearts. Slimes and magma cubes react differently to damage. Their health depends on their size.

Any tool not listed above (hoe's, shears etc.) will do normal "fist" damage when used.

Critical hits are as following:

How can I unlock Super Bandage?

Question

How can I unlock Super Bandage?

It's only item left to unlock Golden God.

Asked by Leadri

Answer

From The Binding of Isaac Wikia:

Increases HP by 1 and gives 2 soul hearts. Trivia: This is a reference to "Bandage Girl" from Super Meat Boy, another game Edmund McMillian worked on. Rarely Found in Boss Rooms.

Unlocked by killing four Horsemen in one playthrough, not just by collecting four Meat Cubes.

This can be pretty tricky given the random nature of the bosses. The four bosses you need to kill, like the quote says, are the Four Horsemen; War, Death, Famine, and Pestilence.

Sadly, encountering all four of them in a single playthrough is entirely random without the aid of The Book of Revelations, as mentioned by Timothy Roy.

Does the link gun repair nodes more quickly when amped?

Question

I was playing a Warfare map recently and I picked up a damage amp as I headed toward a skirmish for the prime node, which my team was controlling. My team took out the attackers just before I arrived, so I decided to pull out my trusty link gun and repair the node before leaving for other team's core.

The prime node seemed kind of like it was repaired more quickly because I was amped, but I wasn't paying very close attention because I've never really considered it before. I was the only person repairing the node at the time. Does the link gun repair nodes more quickly when under the effects of a damage amp, or was I just imagining it?

Asked by eldarerathis

Answer

No, the damage amplifier does not increase healing performed by the link gun to power nodes or to players. The damage amplifier or Double damage as it was known in previous Unreal Tournaments only increases damage. I wish I could find a more authoritative source, but according to this post and my own personal experience, the damage amplifier has no effect on healing produced by the link gun.

If you noticed an increased healing, it is possible that another player with a link gun was nearby, creating a power grid or that another player may have been healing the node from somewhere out of your sight. There is also the possibility of it relating to a given mod or server setting.

Spore freezes after playing for a while

Question

I've been playing spore for a while now, and I found 2 peculiar phenomenons in the game:

  1. Some graphics (such as the monolith, the construction of a colony and lava on planets) don't show up. By don't show up I mean I can see right through the planet if its covered in lava. That I can live with.
  2. After x minutes of gameplay (could be anything, 10 minutes or 2 hours), the game gets frozen. The screen flickers with black, and the sound keeps on going.

I'm on a ASUS laptop, Intel i5 Core, RADEON HD 6370M 1GB graphics. Windows 7 x64 Ultimate

If you need any more details comment and I'll add them. I really don't know what to do. Thanks in advance.

Asked by Truth

Answer

This sounds like a graphics card issue. The missing textures might be caused by an out of date or buggy graphics card driver or an issue with overheating.

First, a few general things to check - is the game patched to the very latest version available? Also, if you're overclocking or otherwise have modified the system, turn that off.

The first step to debugging a graphics card driver issue is to try installing the latest drivers from the manufacturer's (in this case, ASUS) website. If you've tried this and it's not helping, try getting the latest drivers for your laptop's chipset from AMD. It's become less possible to do this in recent years; I can't get generic AMD drivers for my laptop's chipset because the laptop manufacturer forbids it, for instance.

The "freezing after x minutes" problem sounds like it could be a symptom of overheating. Is your laptop sitting on something soft, and perhaps blocking the airflow? Make sure that there's plenty of room for air to circulate. You can also place the laptop on a cooling rack (like what you'd use to cool cookies in the kitchen) to see if that doesn't help.

If you've had it for a while and/or it is in a dusty environment, you might want to consider cleaning the fans and exhaust vents with a bit of canned air. You can get canned air at office supply stores. Make sure you keep the can upright, otherwise there's a chance it will blow a super-cold propellant onto your computer, which can cause problems.

If it's still freezing, it might be a good idea to contact customer support for your laptop. They may know of 3D graphics issues with your particular model, although in my experience customer support tends to have a tough time diagnosing these sorts of issues, so consider it a last resort.

Do I have to “touch” a waypoint to add it to the waypoint list?

Question

In Diablo II, you had to "touch"/click the waypoint as if you were using it to "find" it, adding it to your waypoint list. I know that Diablo III waypoints reset based on the quest, but are waypoints acknowledged automatically upon passing them, or must they be "touched"? If they don't have to be touched, what distance still qualifies as having found the waypoint, and can party members get waypoints for the whole team? Would the whole party get the waypoints even if they weren't there at the waypoint itself, or say, in town while the rest of the party was working through the zone?

Asked by sean

Answer

There is no need to actually click on the waypoint -- simply moving close to it is enough to activate it. This is a large visual and audio effect with pulses of blue light and sound, so it's very easy to tell when you have successfully activated a waypoint.

In multiplayer, you can teleport to any other player, so even if activating waypoints doesn't unlock them for all active players, all you need to do is teleport to your friend to immediately unlock the waypoint yourself.

What does “when poisoned” mean in talent descriptions and how can I reliably become poisoned?

Question

The second half of the alchemist tree consist entirely of talents that depend on Geralt being poisoned. What exactly does it mean in the context and is there any way to induce poisoning at will?

Asked by kotekzot

Answer

Poisoned is a misleading term here - what really triggers this is toxicity, which is increased the more potions you drink at one time. The toxicity of each potion varies, but you can see it when you look at a potion's recipe or when you add it to your active potions during meditation. The bar that fills as you add potions is your toxicity meter.

Drinking a combination of potions that pushes your toxicity meter near the maximum will put you into a state where these bonuses are applied.

We also covered potion toxicity in this question:

Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter, Kleer Skeletons on City of Memphis - Metropolis

Question

I can't seem to find a reasonable way to get to get past this part. I've carefully jumped back across the bridge, but the Kleer Skeletons just keep building up. Once there are enough of them, the bridge extends, allowing them to reach me. How can I defeat this large mob without having to take advantage of an exploit?

Asked by Ben

Answer

I played through this on Serious mode, and I got past this section by rocket-jumping up onto one of the the buildings and laying waste to all the enemies from there. They could still throw stuff at me, but for the most part they were nullified. I don't know if that's what you're calling an exploit, though. Serious Sam harkens back to an older age of gaming where this sort of stuff wasn't really considered an exploit. In fact, in the non-HD version, a lot of secrets were accessible only by rocket jumping.

The other thing to do is make sure you get the secret on this level, since it contains ammo which will be useful. If I remember right, there's actually a cannon in that secret ammo depot, which can help a bit in this fight since the Kleers tend to line up nicely. Since I barely remember the details of it, I'll just cut and paste what I wrote in my Secrets FAQ for the game:

Go to the area on the level where there is a spike pit and bulls that charge across (and into) the pit. There is a chaingun on the other side. Okay. Now, turn around from that pit (back the way you came) and run all the way back to the doors that you came through. Fire rockets at the wall to the left of the door to reveal a secret ammo depo.

Note: You can do this when first entering the area. You don't have to go to the bull pit first. That was just the easiest way to describe it.

Removing Skyrim's HD texture pack before finishing the entire download

Question

I saw the HD texture pack for Skyrim on Steam, so I went ahead and clicked install. One thing I forgot to check is the download size, which is important since my connection speeds are throttled if I exceed 9GB of bandwidth before the end of the month. Is there any way I can cancel the download?

Asked by Ben

Answer

In the Steam Library Downloads page, you can pause and cancel active downloads. Also by right clicking on an entry in your Steam Library, you can do the same.

Unfortunately, because steam binds this form of DLC to your account, your options are limited. As long as Steam has the DLC bound to the game, it will try to install it. You can turn off Steam's automatic updates for Skyrim, but this means that you won't get any of the updates to Skyrim and even manual updating will try to install the DLC so this is not a long-term solution. Your only real solution is to contact Steam Support and have them remove the DLC from your account.

When using multiple exits it will alternate between them, so if you have 2 zerglings, a roach, 2 more zergling and one more roach enter the network and you then command 3 Worms to unload all you will get 2 zerglings from 2 of the worms and 2 roaches from the third.

Compared to the N64 original, a little over double. The reason for this being the inclusion of the Master Quest, which was not originally available on the N64 version. Although it was released later as part of a special promotion. The world is mirrored in the 3DS version of Master Quest, but everything else is the same as the previously released version.

The only content which is 100% new is the boss challenge mode.

How Do Hostile Mobs Spawn in Minecraft?

Question

So I found a village near where I originally spawned and I expanded on it. I thought I could keep it safe by building a 3-4 block high wall around the village, unfortunately this didn't help (now all my villagers are dead!). I still find mobs inside the city walls and inside of the university I built. The university has a basement, and although I usually keep the door to it closed I'll still find the occasional spider, zombie, skeleton warrior or even creepers.

So my question is how do mobs spawn? Does the presence or absence of light make any difference? Are other factors involved?

Asked by BrotherJack

Answer

Yes, the light level makes a difference. In fact, it's probably the single most important factor for hostile mob spawning.

Hostile mobs won't spawn in any area that is above light level 7. Torches produce a light level of 14, and that light level decreases by one for every block (along an axis) out. Therefore, any place that is more than 7 blocks away from a torch could spawn a hostile mob. There are other methods of discouraging hostile mobs from spawning, but keeping a well lit area is key.

This is technically possible, but for some titles it requires software designed to circumvent basic built-in security measures in the PS3. Where are the warp zones?

Question

In which levels are the Warp Zones located in Super Mario Bros. and how do you get to them?

Asked by alexanderpas

Answer

  • Level 1-2: Warp to World 2, 3, or 4
  • Level 4-2: Warp to World 6, 7, or 8
  • Level 4-2: Warp to Word 5 (Yes, there are two on this level)

The following detail came from this site.

Where to find warp zone #1 hidden in level 1-2

You will find the first Warp Zone located at the end of level 1-2. In order to reach it, you will need to ride the previous elevator to the top and then jump onto the brick ceiling. Run all the way to your right and you will find the Warp Zone. Enter the corresponding Pipe to skip to world’s 2, 3 or 4.

Where to find warp zone #2 hidden in level 4-2

This level contains two Warp Zones, one to level 5 located at the end of the level, and this Warp Zone that takes you to levels 6, 7 and 8 located in the middle of the level. To find this Warp Zone look for a high three-brick-long platform that is too high for you to reach, located across from the first elevator platform. There are some invisible blocks that you will need to make appear in order to reach the far left block, which contains a vine. You need to hit the invisible blocks from below to create a staircase allowing you to reach the Vine. To do this, make the first two lower blocks on the righter side appear. They will start to create a staircase. Then hop on them and break the two bricks above. If you haven’t already activated the vine, try to do so now, and then make the following invisible blocks appear if you need them to reach the vine. Climb the vine and you’ll reach the Warp Zone that can take you to worlds 6, 7 or 8 depending on which pipe you enter.

Where to find warp zone #3 hidden in level 4-2

To reach the final Warp Zone (note that you can only take one Warp Zone since both are on the same level), you will need to reach the ceiling from an elevator platform and then run all the way across it to the right, just like you did in level 1-2. This Warp Zone will take you to World 5.
